To establish, facilitate & maintain engagement with the communities of Southern Virginia to improve the health & well-being of residents relating to cancer and cancer research. Serving Southern Virginia since 2010, the Cancer Research and Resource Center of Southern Virginia has two offices, one in Danville and one in Lawrenceville, both located along the State Highway 58 corridor. The Cancer Research and Resource Center of Southern Virginia helps cut through the clutter and fear of a very stressful diagnosis by directing cancer patients, survivors and their networks of support to up-to-date, reliable and helpful information. People can call or stop by our welcoming office on South Main Street in Danville to
• Obtain sound information about cancer diagnoses, treatment options, diet and stress management;
• Find help with financial or transportation assistance and support services from peer-to-peer networks to hospice;
• Learn about the importance of knowing your family’s health/cancer history, getting regular check-ups, and adhering to cancer screening guidelines;
• Attend live, video-conference talks with cutting-edge cancer researchers via our Conversations with Researchers series. The center's staff is also very active outside the office walls. They host events throughout the area, recruiting both nationally known speakers and local medical professionals to raise awareness about ways people can reduce the risks of getting cancer via healthy life choices and following the cancer screening guidelines. In addition to its ongoing, monthly Keeping Well series for people concerned with cancer prevention and survivorship, the centers' big initiatives right now are to
• Emphasize the power of detecting and treating cancer in its early stages;
• Encourage everyone to get screened for colon cancer at the age of 50 (younger if you are at greater risk);
• Raise awareness about the human papillomavirus (HPV), its connection to male and female cancers and the HPV vaccine; and
• Work to reduce illness and death from lung cancer through education and support of to***co cessation efforts.
