We had a great start to the school year yesterday!

To celebrate, we hosted a popcorn party and kicked things off with fun and excitement. We're looking forward to a year full of learning, growth and positive change.

A big thank-you to our dedicated staff for making the first day back so special!

Students and staff from South Boston Day School had an “udderly” fantastic time at Moses Mill Farm, LLC in Chatham, VA! We rolled up our sleeves to learn how to care for and milk goats, and spent time with horses, pigs and cows. It was a fun, hands-on experience and a great way to explore life on the farm.

Huge thanks to Moses Mill Farm for the warm welcome and all the knowledge shared. We had a blast and learned so much!

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting members of our incredible KidLink Treatment Services team! 💙

These dedicated professionals work tirelessly to connect youth with the hospitals and treatment providers best suited to support their needs. It was a joy to meet, learn from and share a few laughs with people who are just as passionate about our mission as we are.

On Friday, July 25, The Hughes Center South Boston Campus hosted a free Lemonade for Community Helpers event! Students and staff had a great time serving up fresh-squeezed, ice-cold lemonade to some of our amazing local heroes—including firefighters, construction workers, police officers, healthcare professionals and teachers.

It was a sweet and simple way to say thank you for the hard work and dedication they bring to our community every day!

On July 24, students and staff from South Boston Day School took a trip to Gretna, Virginia, to visit the incredible Funky Fleece Farm! We had an unforgettable time learning about alpacas, feeding them, and, of course, enjoying plenty of pets and cuddles.

A big thank you to Funky Fleece for being such gracious hosts and giving our students a fun, hands-on learning experience. We loved every minute of it!

Students in Ms. Burchette's adapted curriculum classroom at the South Boston Day School have been having a blast during ESY with plenty of hands-on learning! One of their favorite sensory activities has been practicing letters, numbers and names using shaving cream—learning has never been so messy and fun!

They've also been busy in the kitchen, exploring creative ways to prepare their own snacks. The classroom favorite so far? Delicious "dirt" cups made with Oreos, chocolate pudding and gummy worms.

Learning, laughter and sweet treats—just the way summer should be!

Students at The Hughes Center in Christiansburg partnered with the Recreational Center Partnership program for a day focused on building life skills. Together with staff, students learned how to tie a tie, explored job-search strategies, practiced interview techniques and reviewed résumés. Each student received a tie and dress shirt to take home, courtesy of the Rec Center team.

Students also had the opportunity to create a monthly budget and see firsthand how quickly expenses can add up after paying essential bills. It was a great afternoon of hands-on learning and practical skill building!

Students from The Hughes Center in Christiansburg recently attended a vocational camp hosted by DARS at Roanoke College. They had a great time creating vision boards to showcase their short-term and long-term goals, while also participating in thoughtful discussions about employability skills — including how to dress for success, workplace behavior and what to do when you're unable to attend work.

The experience encouraged students to reflect on their lives after high school, considering future jobs, living arrangements, transportation and more. They also enjoyed lunch and had the chance to connect with peers from across the camp.

At the South Boston Day School, we understand that working in special education and mental health is both deeply rewarding and uniquely challenging. That’s why we prioritize self-care and strive to ensure our staff feels supported and appreciated.

On July 18, we were thrilled to welcome our wonderful friend Brooks, who led a restorative sound bath experience for our team. Staff had the chance to pause, disconnect from daily stress, and enjoy a few calming moments of rest and relaxation.

Our team goes above and beyond for our students every single day, and we’re incredibly grateful for all they do. We’re proud to find meaningful ways to pour back into their cups!

We didn’t let a little rain—okay, maybe a lot of rain—slow us down on Thursday! We celebrated our amazing staff and residents for a job well done on our POP! initiative.

Everyone has been putting in incredible effort, and the feedback and numbers show that all the hard work is making a real difference.

A big thank-you to Kona Ice of Rockingham County for stopping by and treating everyone to a sweet reward for a job well done!
