The South Boston Day School proudly participated in the Area 15 Special Olympics Basketball Competition for the third year in a row at Central Middle School in Charlotte Court House, Va. Our students practiced hard for weeks leading up to the event, and their dedication truly paid off.

We are incredibly proud of every one of our athletes for their teamwork, perseverance and sportsmanship. A special shoutout to Ms. Leslie Blair and her 3-on-3 team for working together and taking first place in the half-court competition. Way to go.

We love being part of this event and celebrating such an incredible community year after year.

Congratulations to Ms. Katina, our January Employee of the Month at South Boston Day School!

Ms. Katina consistently goes above and beyond with her willingness to expand her knowledge of ABA practices and autism, all while bringing a positive attitude, an amazing sense of humor and a beautiful smile that brightens our days. We’re grateful to have her as part of our family and thankful for the care, dedication and heart she brings to serving our students every day.

Our team at South Boston Day School is always learning and growing. Staff recently participated in a professional development session focused on the impact of ACEs and the power of resiliency, led by Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services.

We’re grateful for the knowledge, tools and meaningful conversations, and we look forward to putting what we learned into action to better support and serve our students every day.

The Hughes Educational Center Christiansburg went into full gear for the holiday season this year! The staff put up decorations throughout the school to get staff and students alike into the holiday spirit. From trees and presents to peppermints and ornaments, we went all out when it came to preparing for the holidays.
The staff also wore festive hats and got into the Christmas spirit on the last day of school before the students went on break. The students were also able to write special messages, sign and hand-deliver cards to the residents at Commonwealth Senior Living. The students enjoy the special time with the seniors and now have many new friends.

We had two students who went to hand out the cards and one student to help decorate the Christmas tree at the center. The residents were incredibly grateful for the visit from the staff and students here at the Hughes Educational Center Christiansburg.

Overall, it has been a great holiday season, and we look forward to seeing the students back at school in January!

Christmas Spirit Week was a success! We had a wonderful time at the Danville Day School celebrating the season with our students and staff. A big thank-you to our parents for supporting student participation throughout the week!

Plaid and flannel day kept everyone cozy and comfortable, while twinkle lights day helped our school shine bright. Ugly sweater day brought lots of fun and color, and Santa Imposter day showed incredible creativity. Pajama day was the perfect way to wrap up a week of festive activities!

We’re rolling into gratitude! A huge thank-you to Hitachi for their generous donation to the South Boston Day School. Thanks to their support, we now have a brand-new Bye Bye Buggy to help our youngest learners with mobility challenges safely and comfortably navigate our building and join us on field trips.

We’ve recently enrolled several younger students whose disabilities impact their mobility, and this new set of wheels is already making a big difference, especially during transitions. Because of Hitachi’s kindness, our small friends can move with confidence, inclusion and ease.

We are so grateful for Hitachi’s continued commitment to supporting our students and our community. Thank you for being an incredible community partner and helping us create a more accessible, inclusive school environment for all!

Strikes, spares and Secret Santa surprises! Our staff Christmas party was full of fun, laughter and holiday spirit. We are so thankful for the hardworking, supportive team at Danville Day School and loved celebrating the season together. A big thank you to River District Social for the outstanding service!

South Boston Day School students, staff, families and friends had a blast at our Grinchmas Brunch! The Grinch was up to his usual antics, causing casual mischief, striking poses and trying (unsuccessfully!) to steal our holiday cheer.

We enjoyed crafts, cozy holiday movies, Grinch punch and stacks of green pancakes while laughing our way through the morning. It was such a special time spent together celebrating the season, making memories and sharing lots of smiles (even from the Grinch!).

He made his list and checked it twice, and he definitely knows who was naughty and who was nice.

Last Friday during Spirit Week, we participated in Polar Express Day! Staff and residents enjoyed dressing in pajamas all day.
