WHY THE BIBLE SPEAKS DIRECTLY TO ADDICTION
People say addiction is just a bad habit.
They say some people simply lack discipline.
They say freedom comes from stronger willpower.
Common assumptions.
But Scripture describes something deeper happening in the human heart.
Here are the truths that change everything:
1️⃣ The Power of Enslavement
→ John 8:34
“Everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.”
Addiction is not simply preference.
The Bible describes it as bo***ge that begins to rule a person’s life.
2️⃣ The Battle Inside
→ Romans 7:19
“For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.”
Paul describes the internal war many people feel.
The desire to stop exists, yet the behavior keeps returning.
3️⃣ The Danger of Mastery
→ 1 Corinthians 6:12
“I will not be mastered by anything.”
Anything that begins controlling decisions, thoughts, or actions has taken a place it was never meant to have.
4️⃣ The Deception of Sin
→ Hebrews 3:13
“Sin is deceitful.”
Addiction convinces people they need the very thing that is slowly destroying them.
5️⃣ The Possibility of Freedom
→ John 8:36
“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
The gospel does not only forgive sin.
It offers real freedom from the chains that hold people captive.
6️⃣ The Renewal of the Mind
→ Romans 12:2
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Freedom is not only behavioral.
God begins changing the way a person thinks and desires.
7️⃣ The Strength of God
→ 2 Corinthians 12:9
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
The place where a person feels weakest can become the place where God’s power begins working the most.
This is not just about breaking a habit.
It is about breaking chains.
Addiction says you are controlled forever.
The gospel says freedom is possible.
