School’s out for summer! Time flies when you’re having fun, and before we know it, the school bells will be ringing again! Do you have a child entering 7th grade in West Virginia? Remember, they’ll need a few immunizations before their first day. 📚
Why 7th grade? Teens are considered high risk for meningococcal disease, which can cause an infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord and infections of the blood that can lead to hearing loss, brain damage, kidney damage, loss of limbs, nervous system problems, and death. The MCV4/MenACWY vaccine, which is required for 7th grade entry, helps to protect teens against meningococcal disease as they enter the age when they are at high risk for this disease.
The Tdap vaccine is also required for 7th grade entry to help protect against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). This vaccine provides a boost to their immune systems as kids grow into teens to help protect them from these serious illnesses.
While you’re at the clinic for the required 7th grade immunizations, ask about HPV cancer prevention. The HPV vaccine is also recommended at this age to help protect your pr***en or teen from HPV-related cancers, and can be given in the same visit as the 7th grade immunizations.
Let’s keep our kids safe, healthy, and ready to thrive in the classroom and beyond. Talk to your healthcare provider today or visit a local health department to make sure your child is up to date on their immunizations before the school bell rings. 🩺
