📬 Fan Mail Friday
We love ending the week on a high note, and nothing brightens our day more than hearing from YOU. Here’s one of the kind notes we received recently.

Thank you for lifting us up with your words—it’s our honor to serve.

In April 1974, the Danville Life Saving Crew received our very first Jaws of Life, generously donated by Dan River Mills. This groundbreaking tool meant rescuers could reach patients faster than ever before—and countless lives were changed because of it.

Fast forward to today: the original set is proudly displayed in our Crew Hall (along with many other items from our history!), a reminder of how far emergency response has come and how deeply our community has always supported us.

We’re counting down to our 80th birthday in September 2025—eight decades of answering over 15,000 calls every year, standing by at hundreds of community events, and training new generations of lifesavers.

From 1945 to now, your Crew has been here when seconds count.

We’re taking a ride back in time as we count down to our 80th birthday this September!

This Dodge crash truck was one of the Danville Life Saving Crew’s earliest rescue vehicles. Back then, rigs like this carried the tools needed for car wrecks, entrapments, and other emergencies. It was the start of modern rescue operations in our community.

From this early truck to today’s state-of-the-art ambulances and specialized rescue units, one thing has never changed: our Crew’s commitment to saving lives in Danville.

Follow along each Thursday as we share more pieces of our history leading up to 80 years of service!

Today is National Fentanyl Awareness Day. In Virginia, Governor Glenn Youngkin has ordered all flags to be flown at half-mast in recognition of the lives lost to this crisis.
Fentanyl is now the leading cause of overdose deaths in our state and across the nation. It affects every community—including ours—leaving behind grieving families and first responders who see the devastating impact first-hand.
The Danville Life Saving Crew stands alongside our partners in public safety and healthcare as we fight this epidemic every day. From overdose calls to prevention efforts, our mission is not only to respond, but to help our community understand and take action.
Today, we remember the lives lost. We honor the families who carry their memory. And we commit to continuing the work of saving lives and raising awareness about the dangers of fentanyl.

What. A. Day!

The Danville Life Saving Crew’s 2025 Golf Tournament was a hole-in-one success—and it’s all thanks to YOU!

We had an incredible 32 teams out on the course, making this one of our biggest tournaments yet. From the first swing to the last putt, the day was filled with energy, laughter, and community spirit.

Even more exciting—this event is the Crew’s largest fundraiser of the year. Every sponsorship, every hole sign, every auction bid, and every team that came to play helps keep our ambulances rolling and our crews ready to respond when seconds matter most. Your support makes it possible for us to save lives, train the next generation of responders, and stand strong for Danville and Pittsylvania County 24/7.

We are overflowing with gratitude for everyone who made it possible:
đź’š Our incredible team sponsors who rallied players to the greens
đź’š The generous hole sponsors whose signs lined the course with support
đź’š Every golfer who came out to play for a purpose
đź’š The businesses and individuals who donated items for our auction and prizes

Because of YOU, this wasn’t just a day of golf—it was a day of impact. The funds raised go directly toward fueling our mission and ensuring our community always has lifesaving care close at hand.

From the bottom of our hearts: THANK YOU for swinging with us. Together, we proved that when the community comes together, extraordinary things happen.

(For everyone that played, your team photos are being emailed as we speak!)

We’re bringing you this week’s a day early since tomorrow we’ll be out on the course for our biggest fundraiser of the year—our annual Golf Tournament!

Before we had drones, we had dogs. Meet Smoky and Slick, two bloodhounds who worked with the Danville Life Saving Crew and City Farm in the 1960s. These incredible dogs were trained to find missing persons and even track down escaped prisoners—their noses were the “high-tech” search tools of their day!

Fast forward to today, and DLSC carries on that same mission of search and rescue. Only now, instead of bloodhounds, we deploy drones equipped with cameras and thermal imaging to help locate missing people faster and more safely.

From dogs to drones, one thing hasn’t changed in 80 years: our commitment to protecting and serving our community. Tomorrow’s tournament helps ensure that we can keep doing just that—for the next 80 years and beyond.

Nothing says “back to school” like fresh notebooks, sharpened pencils, and a community that cares!

The Crew was proud to collect and donate school supplies to the United Way of Danville-Pittsylvania County’s school supply drive. United Way has supported the Crew for years, and we’re honored to partner with fellow nonprofits to pool resources and strengthen our community!

Huge thanks to Danville Life Saving and First Aid Crew, Inc. for their generous contribution to our school supply drive!

Your support helps local students start the year strong and ready to learn.

As we count down to our 80th anniversary on September 18, we’re celebrating the progress, the innovation, and the people who have always been at the heart of our mission with a special series.

During the polio crisis, the Danville Life Saving Crew cared for patients using both adult and child iron lungs—remarkable machines that kept people breathing when they couldn’t on their own.

Looking back now, we’re amazed at how far emergency medicine has come in 80 years. From iron lungs to today’s advanced ventilators and monitors, one thing has never changed: the Crew’s commitment to giving our community the very best care possible.
