OUCH!

"Kidney stone cases are rising among children, and some medical professionals implicate a familiar culprit: ultra-processed foods.”

Meanwhile, “other experts trace the increase to genetics, poor diet and insufficient water intake,” and “some health experts predict the problem will worsen.” While “some research suggests that genetic predisposition may play a role...experts say the increase more likely reflects dietary habits and lifestyle,” including “salt-laden diets.”

Pediatric Suggestions to Keeping Your Child in School Every School Day

School is a place for children to learn, be with friends, eat healthy meals, get exercise and find support to help them grow and thrive. So it’s important for them to attend every day.

Focus on sleep, exercise and nutrition. Make sure your child eats nutritious meals, drinks enough water and gets plenty of physical activity and sleep. Children who eat a nutritious breakfast do better at school.

Stay up-to-date on checkups and immunizations. If your child has not had a checkup in the last year, schedule a visit with your pediatrician. Schools also may require a pre-participation (sports) exam for those playing sports. If your child takes medication at school, your pediatrician can go over your child’s treatment plan. Your child also should receive immunizations on time, including the annual flu vaccine.

Tune into your child’s mental health. Let your child know it is OK to talk with you about how he or she is feeling. Look for changes in behavior or signs of anxiety, depression or other serious risks. Try to prioritize family routines, meals and self-care breaks, like taking walks together. Ask your pediatrician or your child’s school for help if your child needs mental health support. Keep in mind that the risk of su***de is higher for children and teens who live in a home where guns are stored loaded or unlocked.

Talk about bullying and kindness. Some children miss school because of hate or bullying. Encourage your child to seek help from a trusted adult if discriminated against or see others being bullied. Talk about treating others with respect and how simple acts of kindness can make a big difference.

Plan for mindful media use. Create or update a family media plan so your child can balance screen time with sleep, exercise and other healthy activities. Help your child choose high-quality programs or games and recognize and avoid false information sources online.

With the right supervision, staffing & support, cheer programs can help kids build leadership, strength & team skills while minimizing injury risk.

10 key points to maximize safety (& fun!) in cheer

• School-based cheer programs in all 50 states should be overseen by state associations & school athletic departments. (As of 2024, just over half of states track cheer programs & sets safety, coaching & equipment standards.)
• Cheer coaches should be trained & certified in safety techniques, especially spotting. This ensures safety & provide physical support for partner stunts & other advanced moves.
• Cheer programs should consider the age & skill level of participants before introducing new techniques so all can participate safely.
• Cheer stunts, skills & events should never take place on concrete, asphalt, dirt, vinyl floors or surfaces that are wet or uneven. Safe surfaces reduce the chances that athletes will get hurt.
• Pyramids should not go above the height of two participants, & spotters should always be present to steady kids during flying moves or dismounts.
• Written emergency action plans should explain exactly what will happen if a cheer athlete gets hurt. Every school, gym, coach, athlete & family should have a copy of the plan & know what to do in an emergency.
• Kids should have a preparticipation physical exam before starting cheer or spirit programs so that doctors can open a family conversation about risks, benefits & safety.
• Cheer events should be in venues that comply with safety rules set by USA Cheer, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) or the U.S. All-Star Federation.
• Coaches, athletes, parents & others in cheer programs should learn the signs & symptoms of concussion & how to seek care for athletes. Athletes with concussions or other serious injuries should not return to cheer until they have received clearance from a medical professional.
• Kids with disabilities can do cheer, too! Parents & athletes can learn more about getting involved from ParaCheer International & USA Cheer.

Kids with good physical fitness are more likely to grow into teens with better mental health and brain function, a new study has found.

Children who performed better at shuttle sprints scored better on cognitive tests as teenagers, researchers found.

In addition, better cardio fitness in childhood added up to lower levels of stress and depression among teenagers, results show.

Whooping Cough Is on the Rise, Returning to Pre-Pandemic Trends, according to the CDC

“The U.S. is experiencing more than four times as many whooping cough cases compared with last year – a spike that some experts attribute to post-pandemic vaccine fatigue.” On Thursday, the CDC “said that 14,569 cases of whooping cough had been reported so far in 2024,” which is a “significant increase over last year’s total of 3,475 cases.” And according to an agency “spokesperson, preliminary cases reported so far this year are the highest since 2014.”

ABOUT | Walnut Creek Pediatrics Wellness

The doctor's office can be a scary place for children. But when a child's doctor knows them well, develops a long-term relationship with them, and treats them like family, the children quickly understand that we are here to help them stay healthy, and compassionately treat them when they are ill.

Please visit us at our temporary address:

  • 911 San Ramon Valley Blvd, Suite 100 Danville, CA 94526 - A short 9 minute drive down HWY 680 from Walnut Creek.
  • We are currently waiting for our permanent office to be ready right next to John Muir Hospital. In the meantime, 1to1 Pediatrics is generously allowing us to see patients at their site.
