One of the things I’ve done throughout my weight loss journey and one of the things I’ve taught my clients is to make meals meaningful, and to slow down long enough to enjoy them. I try to always keep my table set (without the actual dishes or flatware) so that when I come home, I have a place I want to eat.

I have some of my grandmother’s every day Desert Rose dishes. While I’ve enjoyed them, I’ve had a hard time setting a table with them. My grandmother always had fresh roses that she grew, and her house and even her linens smelled like them. She also always set beautiful tables for her family— for no occasion other than that her loved ones were gathering there.

This small thing makes me happy today.

Sometimes losing weight feels impossible. What do Roger Bannister and Top Gun: Maverick have to do with it? Here's my newest post, which includes six tips to getting busy doing the impossible thing.

If I said the name Roger Bannister, it probably wouldn’t mean too much to you, but he was a very big deal for while. &nb…

“If you've seen a loved one take a bad fall – like my mother did a few months ago – you know the importance of muscle strength.
Muscle mass peaks in our 30s and then starts a long, slow decline. Muscle-loss, also called sarcopenia, affects more than 45% of older Americans, especially women. “As a country, we are under-muscled," says Richard Joseph, a wellness-focused physician. It's a key culprit of physical decline. Loss of strength increases the risk of falling, the top cause of death from injury in older adults.”

I agree with almost all of this article and it’s worth the read—especially if you’re a woman, or an older adult! But do note, even though this article lists beans as a great protein source, they aren’t. Beans typically have a 3:1 carbohydrate to protein ratio, which means to meet your protein intake, you’d be waaaay over on your carbohydrate intake!

We start to lose muscle in our 30s, and the loss accelerates with age, putting us at risk of frailty later in life. But what you eat — specifically how much protein — is a big part of the solution.

I don’t do much in the way of personal training anymore, but if I did, I would absolutely recommend this book to clients. I still get asked a lot of questions, and this book has a lot to offer to people just trying to get started getting healthy as well as to people that have been “in the field” a long time. It has a lot of really sound advice presented in new and thought provoking ways, and it makes the basic information you need to be healthy accessible. I love that the author focuses on small changes (which is how I’ve always coached) becuase I believe that is where people make changes that are truly sustainable. I don’t have any connection to this author or book, and don’t get any kickbacks if you buy it. But a client recommended it to me, and I’ve been enjoying listening to it as I’ve been walking and doing my cardio. If you’re trying to put some of the pieces together to be your healthiest self, this is absolutely worth the read/listen.

💯% truth!

💯% truth!

The reason we have weight classes in combat sports and strength sports is because strength is an advantage.

The reason we separate youth from adults in sport is because strength is an advantage.

The reason men and women compete in different divisions is because strength is an advantage.

Strength training is your secret weapon.

New post up on the blog! This one new habit I've adopted is making my life a LOT easier. Would it work for you?

Sometimes, I get good and tired of myself. Of hearing my own excuses. Of doing the same thing on repeat, even though it isn’t working. Of not seeing the progress I’m so badly wanting. B…
