Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims, their families, and the first responders, hospital staff, and the extensive support staff who came together to serve in this tragedy. There are far too many organizations to list from all over Western New York. It is amazing to see so many people working together, from those on the front lines to those in the hospitals, whether you're an ED Nurse treating patients, environmental services staff cleaning rooms and preparing beds, or those who took time out of their day to deliver food and water to first responders. Thank you to the hundreds of people in our WNY community who made an impact today.

Today has been an incredibly busy and difficult day for emergency services in Genesee County and surrounding counties. Here in LeRoy, we started the day responding to a double fatal accident in our district. Later in the day, as you all now know, a tour bus rolled over on the Thruway in Pembroke, causing unimaginable casualties. Agencies from Genesee County and all contiguous counties played a role in responding to this incident and helping to cover 911 calls throughout the rest of the county.

There are far too many agencies to thank, but we are EXTREMELY proud of the way in which EVERYONE stepped up and did their absolute best in the midst of an impossible situation. We truly are Genesee County Strong.

Here in LeRoy, immediately upon hearing about the accident, we paged out for all available crew members to come into work. We were able to staff both ambulances and our flycar for the afternoon. One ambulance and the fly car responded to the thruway incident while our primary duty crew remained in the district covering LeRoy and surrounding areas to ensure that no calls went unanswered - including a car accident at 19&490 that we were able to cover with both of our ambulances, and assistance of an ambulance from Bergen Fire Department.

Today was a day absolutely overflowing with tragedies, and our thoughts are with those affected by these incidents. Please know that everyone across our entire region gave their all today to make as much of a difference as humanly possible.

Happy EMS Week 2025 to all of our EMS providers, and all providers far and wide!

DEMS wouldn't be possible without the countless hours volunteered by our providers, and the sacrifices they've made! I appreciate absolutely everything they do, and feel so blessed to call them my crew. ❤️

Some of you may already have seen that our ambulance Darien EMS 45 has a new look! While she has already been serving the community over the last couple weeks she has been waiting on a few finishing touches to officially make her debut. The original 45 served the community for 17 years until having to be retired last year. We hope to get at least as many years if more out of our new rig! Thank you to Gorman Enterprises for helping us through the purchasing process and helping to bring everything together for us. Thank you Signworks Sportswear for bringing our beautiful graphics to life.

EMS has long been under reimbursed by New York State Medicaid. The continual rising costs to provide service have outpaced inflation and EMS agencies are in danger. Please contact your representatives to help EMS obtain a critical increase in Medicaid funding to close the payment gap.

EMS Agencies across the state depend on insurance payments to maintain their operations. Medicare reimbursement rates have not risen to match the rising costs of supplies, equipment, training, and emergency vehicles. In 2024, our organization saw Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements eat into 44.3% of our potential billable charges compared to private insurance. We regularly operate at a loss on these types of calls. A Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement increase would benefit nonprofit and volunteer EMS greatly. Additional information in the comments.

NYS Medicaid has the lowest reimbursement rates of any state surrounding NY, with no annual increase.

Medicare (Upstate NY adj) rates vs Medicaid are:
ALS Emergency - $521.36 vs Medicaid - $296.00
BLS Emergency - $439.04 vs Medicaid - $250.00
Loaded miles - $9.15 vs Medicaid - $3.02

We would like to give a huge thank you to the Gary Sinise Foundation for providing the Stryker Power Load and Lucas CPR Device. The power load will make its debut in the coming weeks when the new Darien 45 receives its final approval to be placed in service. The Lucas CPR Device has already been hard at work serving the community these last few months on our squad car. This equipment improves the safety, health, and capabilities of our volunteer first responders. It also acts as an additional responder that never tires in key situations. This equipment will help keep our joints and backs intact. Did you know: New York State saw a nearly 20% decrease in active EMS providers from 2019 to 2022? Being able to do more with less and keep our responders healthy and safe ensures we can continue to serve, and this equipment does just that.
