There is something powerful about truly being there for a friend. Not in the big, dramatic moments, but in the quiet, everyday spaces; the times when they seem a little distant, or when their smile doesn’t always match their eyes. Often, these small changes speak louder than words.

Sometimes, all it takes is a gentle question: “Are you okay?” or “You seem a little distant today, do you want to talk?” It is such a simple act, but it can open a door that has been closed for too long. When someone feels seen, when they sense that we genuinely care, it gives them permission to let their guard down. Suddenly, the walls begin to come down, and the heart starts to speak.

Listening—really listening, is one of the greatest gifts we can offer another person. It is not about having advice ready, or knowing the perfect think to say. It is about creating a safe space where someone can share their fears, doubts, or pain without worrying about being judged and where they know their concerns will be kept confidential. Sometimes, just sitting beside a friend in silence says more than words ever could.

We all go through moments when we need that same kind of care; times when we long for someone to simply notice, to ask how we are doing and mean it. Friendship is a beautiful exchange—a give and take of empathy, presence, and love. When we show up for others, we remind them of their worth, and we strengthen the quiet bond that holds true friends together.

So next time you think of a friend and something tells you to check in, listen to that feeling. Send the message, make the call, ask the question. You never know; that small act of kindness could be exactly what they need to find a little light again in their lives.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Veterans Day Ceremony this past Tuesday, to honor and celebrate the brave men and women who have served our country. It was a beautiful and meaningful ceremony.

Yard waste (leaf and brush) pick-up is included free with our LRS residential garbage service. Yard waste collection begins April 1 and continues through the second full week of December. It’s collected the same day as garbage and recyclables. Organic food scraps may be mixed into yard waste.

As we approach Veterans Day on Monday, November 11, our Darien Community joins our nation in paying tribute to the brave men and woman who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States. Their courage, devotion, and sacrifice have preserved the freedoms and principles that define us as a country.

This year holds particular significance as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps, founded on November 10, 1775. For two and a half centuries, the Marines have exemplified honor, courage, and commitment – values that continue to strengthen our country and inspire all who serve.

While I am not a veteran myself, I hold a profound respect and gratitude for those who have stood in defense of our Constitution and our way of life. Their selfless service represents the very best of what it means to be an American. Their service should also remind us that freedom Is never free, it is earned and safeguarded by those willing to stand in harm’s way.

In reflecting on their dedication, I am reminded of President Theodore Roosevelt’s timeless words from his “Man in the Arena” speech:

“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena…who strives valiantly…who spends himself in a worthy cause…who at best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

Our veterans and active-duty service members are indeed those “in the arena.” Their courage, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to duty continue to safeguard our freedoms and uphold the ideals upon which this nation was founded.

As we honor both Veterans Day and the 250th anniversary of the Marine Corps, let us reaffirm our collective gratitude to all who have served--continue to serve our great nation. May we each take a moment to thank a veteran, to reflect on their sacrifice, and to renew our dedication to the enduring cause of liberty.

In our continuing effort to keep Darien residents informed, the Darien Police Department is changing the company used to provide Emergency Notifications via texts. These texts will be sent by the company CodeRED when an incident within the City may impact the community. CodeRED will ensure rapid and reliable emergency notifications no matter the time of day (or night). There is no cost to sign up for this service.
