Ruth was born on April 30th, 1941 in Marlboro County to the late Robert Lee Sellers and Lollie Virginia Beverly Sellers. Ruth was a member of Freedom Baptist Church in Darlington, SC. She was married to Duncan “Buddy” Legrand McArthur on March 18th, and they were married for 49 years when he passed. Also preceding her in death her only son Kenneth (Cindy) Shepherd.
Ruth was very independent and worked like the Energizer bunny….always taking care of her great-grandchildren that lived with her, making sure that they got their homework done each day and being sure they were all dressed very nicely and presentable. She was known for her baking, cooking, cake making, and decorating skills. She helped so many friends with her catering, wedding decorating, church events, etc. and most times didn’t even charge them a dime. Ruth loved to talk, loved animals, children, especially her grands and great grandchildren. She especially loved all the daycare kids where she worked for her very good friend Dawn Stokes Kirby for 22 years. Before working in daycare, she worked at DuBose Jewelers and was very close to Mr. and Mrs. Bill DuBose and their son Danny. Ruth always dressed so nicely and got her hair done weekly by her wonderful friend, Felisha Watkins. She loved to go to yard sales, Goodwill and Habitat stores with her close friend, Ms. Barbara Ammons who has since passed. They would bring their findings home and “brag” about all the deals that they had found. Those two were happy and enjoyed the time they spent together. Ruth could sew and make clothing better than you could buy in town. She could also do calligraphy, draw, make crafts, painted, arranged flowers, she was a very gifted and talented lady.
Ruth’s grandchildren are Christopher (Autumn) Shepherd of NC, Savannah Nicole (Russell) Willis of Florence, and the late Michael Alex Sheperd. Her great grandchildren she leaves behind are: Madyson (Autumn) Eccher, Chrissy Eccher, Ryan Shearon, Kylee Shearon, with Kinsley, Ashley, Charisma, Alex Jr., Logan, KC and Brinley Shepherd. Also, her 1 great great-grandchild Kayson Eccher.
She is survived by her brother-in-law, Billy (Caddie) D. McArthur and sister-in-law Rose Ellen Lawson. All three of her sisters have preceded her in death: Mary Helen Sellers Lee, Martha Faye Renolds, and Dianne Haggard.
Ruth was blessed and loved by her special friends that made sure that her needs were taken care of: Dawn Kirby Stokes, Dr. Barry Clark, Felishia Watkins, Judy Stokes, as well as Randy and Dianne James. She also had a special niece Rebecca McArthur of Bennettsville, and great nephew Matt Young of Hartsville with whom she loved both dearly. Ruth will live on in the hearts of her friends and family.
