Hazel Waters Meserve

Hazel Ann Waters Meserve,86 passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. A memorial service is being planned and will take place at a later date.

Mrs. Meserve was born December 6th, 1939, in Florence, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Lucielle Bedingfield Waters and the late Dr. Charles Maynand Waters, Sr. She graduated from McClenaghan High School in 1958 & attended Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. While living in Lamar for a short time, she began working at NyTronics and later on as a secretary for the Lamar School System. She then moved to Darlington for awhile and was named Chairman For The Darlington Community Breath Of Life Campaign (Cystic Fibrosis) and was twice named for the SC Association of Special Citizens for Darlington County. She also volunteered with the American Cancer Society and American Heart Fund Drives. In October 1976, she moved to Florence and started working with Belk Department Store. During her time there she received many sales awards and retired after 26 years. Hazel was a member of First Baptist Church of Florence and also a member of The Fifty-Year Club. While attending Ebenezer Baptist Church, she was a member of The Red Hat Society, and she made her debut at the 1958 Tarantella Ball in Florence. She was an enormous Gamecocks fan, enjoyed working in the yard, working out, and the company of people.

Hazel leaves behind her children: Melinda (Tony) Hensley and David (Tamra) Meserve. Her step-grandson Tray (Michelle) Bryant, and step great- grandchildren: Silas, Luna, and Atticus. As well as her half-sister Rosalind Waters Groseclose.

Preceding her in death are her parents, son Patrick Meserve and sister Debra Waters Lendrim.

Stanley Smothers

Joe Stanley Smothers, passed away Sunday, April 26th, 2026. A visitation will be held for him on Thursday, April 30th, 2026 from 2:00 to 3:00pm at Belk Funeral Home. His funeral service is to follow at 3:00pm in the Chapel. With burial following service at The Smothers Family Cemetery.

Stanley was born on June 25th, 1956 to the late William Edward Smothers and Beatrice Gandy Smothers in Darlington, South Carolina. In 1977 he met and married the love of his life Wanda Howle. Stanley made his career as a car hauler and worked for Bobby Tucker. Stanley’s C.B. Handle was Trouble Shooter, he liked listening to Def Leopard and AC/DC. He enjoyed tinkering on different projects, loved his family dearly and playing with his grandbabies. Stanley was a character, he loved to joke around, and make people laugh. He also had a big heart and never missed a chance to help someone if he could.

He leaves behind his beloved wife Wanda Howle Smothers of 49 years. Their children: Heather (Clint Deas) Smothers and Brandon (Jessica Cook) Smothers. Along with their grandchildren: Skylar Smothers, C.J. Deas, Ayden Poston, Brandon Smothers, Jr., Barrett Smothers and Tyler Watford. His siblings: Howard Smothers, Carolyn (the late Walter) Weatherford, and William Edward Smothers, Jr. Many nieces and nephews. His dog Pepper.

Preceding him in death are his parents, sister Charlene Moore, brother Kenny Smothers, and nephew Wayne Smothers.

Stanley will be deeply missed by so many.

Ruth Sellers McArthur

We are saddened to announce the passing of Mrs. Ada Ruth McArthur. She passed away Thursday, April 23rd, 2026 at Bethea Retirement Community in Darlington, South Carolina. Anyone wishing to sign her register or pay their last respects are invited to do so between the hours of 1:00 and 5:00 Monday at Belk Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, April 28th at Florence National Cemetery.

Ruth was born on April 30th, 1941 in Marlboro County to the late Robert Lee Sellers and Lollie Virginia Beverly Sellers. Ruth was a member of Freedom Baptist Church in Darlington, SC. She was married to Duncan “Buddy” Legrand McArthur on March 18th, and they were married for 49 years when he passed. Also preceding her in death her only son Kenneth (Cindy) Shepherd.

Ruth was very independent and worked like the Energizer bunny….always taking care of her great-grandchildren that lived with her, making sure that they got their homework done each day and being sure they were all dressed very nicely and presentable. She was known for her baking, cooking, cake making, and decorating skills. She helped so many friends with her catering, wedding decorating, church events, etc. and most times didn’t even charge them a dime. Ruth loved to talk, loved animals, children, especially her grands and great grandchildren. She especially loved all the daycare kids where she worked for her very good friend Dawn Stokes Kirby for 22 years. Before working in daycare, she worked at DuBose Jewelers and was very close to Mr. and Mrs. Bill DuBose and their son Danny. Ruth always dressed so nicely and got her hair done weekly by her wonderful friend, Felisha Watkins. She loved to go to yard sales, Goodwill and Habitat stores with her close friend, Ms. Barbara Ammons who has since passed. They would bring their findings home and “brag” about all the deals that they had found. Those two were happy and enjoyed the time they spent together. Ruth could sew and make clothing better than you could buy in town. She could also do calligraphy, draw, make crafts, painted, arranged flowers, she was a very gifted and talented lady.

Ruth’s grandchildren are Christopher (Autumn) Shepherd of NC, Savannah Nicole (Russell) Willis of Florence, and the late Michael Alex Sheperd. Her great grandchildren she leaves behind are: Madyson (Autumn) Eccher, Chrissy Eccher, Ryan Shearon, Kylee Shearon, with Kinsley, Ashley, Charisma, Alex Jr., Logan, KC and Brinley Shepherd. Also, her 1 great great-grandchild Kayson Eccher.

She is survived by her brother-in-law, Billy (Caddie) D. McArthur and sister-in-law Rose Ellen Lawson. All three of her sisters have preceded her in death: Mary Helen Sellers Lee, Martha Faye Renolds, and Dianne Haggard.

Ruth was blessed and loved by her special friends that made sure that her needs were taken care of: Dawn Kirby Stokes, Dr. Barry Clark, Felishia Watkins, Judy Stokes, as well as Randy and Dianne James. She also had a special niece Rebecca McArthur of Bennettsville, and great nephew Matt Young of Hartsville with whom she loved both dearly. Ruth will live on in the hearts of her friends and family.

Mary Holloway

Mary Jane Holloway passed away on Thursday, April 24th, 2026. A Celebration Of Life will be held for her on Friday, May 1st in the Belk Funeral Home Chapel at 3:00pm.

Mary was born in Darlington County on January 9th,1965 to the late Brunson O’Neal McKnight and Mildred Lynch McKnight. She was raised in the United Methodist Church and enjoyed attending church. Mary loved her sweet little dog, “Little Bit”, watching Madea movies, along with tv shows like “My 600-lb life” and “Dr. Pimple Popper ". She had a wonderful sense of humor and liked watching reels of small, tiny dogs scaring big dogs.

She leaves behind her son Joseph “JoJo” (Shannon Hammett) Holloway, her siblings: Dorothy McKnight-Green, Connie McKnight, and J.D. (Dannette) McKnight. Her many special nieces and nephews, and the numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Her cousin Ida Williams, close friend Jennifer Barton and her caregiver/transporter Keith Weikle.

Preceding her in death her loving husband Joey Holloway and son J.J. Holloway. Her parents and her siblings: Shelby Jean Anderson, Mildred “Pee Wee” McKnight, Laverne McKnight, Richard McKnight, Ronnie McKnight, Dianne McKnight, and Baby Infant McKnight.

Memorials may be made in her name to Belk Funeral Home.

Harold Howle

Henry Harold Howle, Jr. passed away on Friday, April 24, 2026 in Darlington, SC. A visitation will be held for Harold on Sunday, April 26th at Belk Funeral Home from 3:00 to 4:00pm. A memorial service will follow at 4:00pm in the chapel.

Harold was born December 13th, 1962 in Darlington County to the late Henry Howle and Dorothy Odom Howle. He worked as a meat cutter at IGA in Darlington. He was well known and loved in the Dovesville Community, where he spent a lot of time cutting peoples grass. Harold enjoyed hunting, fishing, and setting nets for herring at Lowthers Lake.

Harold leaves behind his son John Henry Howle, grandson Hunter Howle, his brothers Harley “Willie” Howle and Lonnie (Kathy) Howle, sister Wanda (Stanley) Smothers, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, nephew Josh Henry Howle and niece Jessica Howle.

A special thank you to everyone in the Dovesville Community that has reached out and helped. It was very much appreciated. Harold will be missed deeply by those that knew him.

Stephen Robert Windham passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence. A graveside service will be held Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Lamar Memorial Cemetery, with arrangements by Belk Funeral Home.

Stephen was born on October 31, 1958, in Florence, South Carolina, to the late Robert F. Windham and Penny Nathans Windham. He had a deep appreciation for classic cars and enjoyed collecting a wide variety of items. Over the years, he worked at A.O. Smith and Tally Metals and later retired from Dean Foods. He is survived by his brother, Mike Windham.

Stephen was known for his friendly nature and gift for conversation—he truly never met a stranger.
