When a creative mind shows up to therapy with a vision - we are honored to help bring it to life! ✨

This week's masterpiece: tiny versions of him and Miss Kate - complete with pipe cleaner arms and of course her yellow pants! 💛

Supporting creativity means following their lead, honoring their ideas, and celebrating the details that matter most to them. This is where imagination, connection, and therapy goals all come together. 🎨🧠

So much fun hearing everyone’s positive affirmations while we worked on handwriting in OT last week! ✏️💕

As we practiced letter formation, spacing, and pencil control, we also practiced speaking kindly to ourselves. Building strong writing skills and even stronger self-confidence - one affirmation at a time 💗✨

💬 Gestures typically come before words. Using and imitating early gestures - like clapping, waving, and pointing - helps toddlers communicate wants, share attention, and participate in interactions before speech emerges. Gesture imitation often develops before verbal imitation because often requires less complex motor control, making it a way for the child to engage in social interactions before they are able to form words verbally.

💬 Understanding words often comes before saying them. When toddlers follow familiar routines, recognize common people, toys, and foods, or complete simple directions, they’re showing strong receptive language skills. These early understanding skills build the foundation for communication before they begin using the words.

🤩 As speech-language pathologists we LOVE language routines!
💬 Before words emerge, toddlers learn to anticipate what comes next. Anticipating language routines - like pausing during songs, daily routines, or playful phrases such as ‘ready, set…go!’ - teaches children the rhythm of communication. Building anticipation with routines helps teach kids meaning and what words can go where. These predictable moments help toddlers learn turn taking, build attention, and feel confident joining in, long before they can use words.

💬 Before words emerge, communication begins with connection. Through turn taking, children learn to copy gestures, actions, sounds, and eventually words - and imitation is one of the strongest predictors of early language development. We build turn-taking skills through imitation of gestures, playful routines, shared activities, and non-word vocalizations - laying the foundation for language, one interaction at a time. This skills begins developing from birth - smiling back-and-forth, taking turns shaking a toy, or imitating your child's coos and babbling - all support development of turn taking!
