John Cullen Fennelly, 82, of Bettendorf, passed away Thursday, January 8, 2026, at MercyOne Genesis in Davenport. In accordance with his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

John was born on May 23, 1943, in Davenport, Iowa, the son of John and Medora (Bolmer) Fennelly. He was raised in a proud Irish Catholic family, a heritage that shaped his values, faith, and strong sense of family throughout his life. John graduated from Assumption High School in 1961, where he developed a lifelong appreciation for athletics and teamwork. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado where he also was a multi-sport athlete, earning letters in football, baseball, basketball, golf, and wrestling.

In 1974, John married Linda Corry. Together, they shared more than 51 years of marriage, building a life centered on family, commitment, and mutual love and support.

John dedicated much of his career to education, teaching in New Mexico, Chicago, and Durant, Iowa. Later in his life he served as a vocational instructor for Lakeland College, teaching inmates at the East Moline Correctional Facility. John believed strongly in the power of education and its ability to shape lives.

John had an entrepreneurial spirit. In the 1970’s, he owned and operated two Davenport bars, Fennelly’s Tap and Fennelly’s Irish Pub. The St. Patrick’s Day celebrations were legendary, and John was the first to adorn the street with a painted Shamrock to mark the holiday. He also founded and co-owned the MidWest Custodial Supply House which he later sold. John was also known to many through his role as a coach. He served as head football coach at Durant High School and took them to a Conference Championship in 1971, his players declaring him a “great football coach, on and off the field.” He also served as an Assistant Football Coach at St. Ambrose University. Suong Le Roe

Suong Le Roe passed away peacefully on January 6, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. She was 79 years old and was surrounded by love.Suong lived her life guided by one quiet, unwavering intention: to make sure her children were cared for. Not just safe, but successful in life, in whatever way that came to mean for each of them.Born in Cà Mau, Vietnam, on August 10, 1946, Suong was orphaned at an early age and raised by her grandmother before being taken into the Catholic Church, where she lived as a nun for a time. She grew up subsistence farming, learning how to live off the land and rely on herself. Loss, poverty, and war shaped her early years, but they made her resilient, thoughtful, and deeply capable. That instinct for self-sufficiency stayed with her. Even while working full-time and raising three children, Suong always kept a vegetable and herb garden, growing herbs until the end of her life. At one point, her suburban backyard became a small farm, complete with pigeons, chickens, goats, guinea fowl, and even a donkey. She also loved fishing, a skill learned in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta and continued in the United States, often filling coolers with fish that she would clean, portion, and freeze to feed her family for months.Preparation was one of the ways Suong showed love. Her purse always held tissues and napkins, needle and thread, pen and paper, and extra money—just in case. There was always extra bottled water in her home and car, always. The greatest way Suong expressed love, though, was through food. Her first question was always, “Have you eaten yet?” Meals—especially with her Vietnamese family and friends who shared the experience of rebuilding life in the United States—became long, joyful gatherings. Many of her children’s American friends were introduced to Vietnamese food at her table, and all were welcome.Suong was stubborn, generous, funny, and soft-spoken. She was endlessly curious, always keeping English-to-Vietnamese and Vietnamese-to-English dictionaries close, writing new words wherever she could. Her faith, learned early through the Church, remained deeply important to her. She knew it well and welcomed thoughtful conversation. Her Bible was always nearby, and her rosary hung from the headboard of her bed.During the Vietnam War, Suong met her husband, Roger, and later worked as a switchboard operator for the U.S. Army. She had three children—Trinh, Roger Jr., and David—and eventually made her home in the United States after time in Germany.Suong is survived by her three children, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Her legacy lives on in the care she showed, the strength she carried, the steady love she gave, and the bellies she filled. She lived through hardship but never let it define her. She will be missed deeply and remembered always—in the gardens we tend, the meals we share, and the quiet ways we look out for one another.

James Matthew Entwistle, Jr. was born on September 13, 1952, in Sikeston, Missouri, to Genevieve (Kallal) and James M. Working as an engineer for Phillips Petroleum, the company sent him to work in the North Sea off the coast of Norway. While living in Norway he met Siv Brit Saetre at a disco in 1977. After several years together he convinced her to move to Oklahoma where they were united in marriage on February 27, 1981.

Jim was always grateful for his life and loved playing an active role in his children’s lives. Jim marched to the beat of his own drum, happy, involved, and full of energy.

Jim was a superb athlete whose first great love was swimming. He excelled at water polo, founded the water polo club at Rolla and then joined a water polo club in Stavanger, winning the 1977 Norwegian Water Polo championship. Later, Jim participated in many triathlons and ran marathons posting a personal best 3:08 finish. He was a regular at YMCA pools and found great pleasure in riding in 18 RAGBRAIs.

Richard "Dick" Koch

Richard “Dick” Koch left his earthly home on January 8, 2026, to join the love of his life Lois for their heavenly journey together. Dick was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on December 27, 1923 to Frank John Charles Koch and Hazel Leininger Koch.

Dick met Lois Jeanne Johnson at South St. Paul High School, and she was the only one for his eyes. Their life together was interrupted by World War II when Dick enlisted in the Marines the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He attended the V-12 program at the University of Notre Dame prior to being deployed to the Pacific Theatre as a lieutenant in the Third Marines. Upon returning, he finished his business degree at the University of Minnesota. He was reactivated for the Korean Conflict and served stateside. Once a Marine, always a Marine—and he was a proud one to the end. His worn Third Marines golf hat went with him everywhere, and he lit up when a young person would recognize it and say, “Semper Fi, Sir!”

Dick and Lois married on September 12, 1949. Dick worked in the meat packing industry for Swift Independent his entire life and was active in Rotary and other community activities wherever he lived. His faith was deep, and God came first. A cradle Episcopalian, he provided leadership in the churches he attended and converted to Catholicism late in life. He loved attending Mass at Christ the King Chapel at St. Ambrose University as seeing the young people in worship lifted him up.

Family meant everything to Dick. He and Lois worked to provide their family a happy and productive life. They fulfilled their dream of ensuring a fun family home base when they retired on a lake near Brainerd, Minnesota. Their children and grandchildren have many fond memories of summer and winter fun at the lake. Lois and Dick spent 60 years (and 4 months and 13 days as he always reminded us) together before Lois passed away on January 25, 2010.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Lutgens. He is survived by son, Steve (Jill Chafetz), daughter, Susan Cline (Roy), and son, Paul (Sherree). His five grandchildren [Melinda Kerns (Ethan), Andrew Koch (Jessie), Kristin Hansen (Nick), Amelia Cline, and Abby Cline] and eight great grandchildren (Cassie, Trevor, Alyssa, and Connor Kerns; Kinsley and Colette Koch; and Alaina and Elsey Hansen) were the light of his life and could always be counted on to lift his spirits.

Electing cremation, a Funeral Mass and interment will be held when family can be brought together to celebrate Dick’s life. Gifts can be made to St. Ambrose University Campus Ministry or a charity of your choice. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
