Mr. Wessel passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at the Kahl Home, Davenport.
Danny was born March 19, 1937, in Cedar Rapids, the second son of Melvin and Maxine Wessel. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids in 1955, where he was an outstanding athlete in basketball, football, and baseball. From there, he went on to Coe College, but football injuries ended his collegiate sports career.
On October 3, 1959, he married Janice Svoboda, who he had met when she was one week old. His mother took him next door to see the new baby. For 20 years, they were neighbors and then married.
After graduating from Coe, he began his government employee career, and he and Jan moved to Ohio, Utah, and Michigan, and then back to Iowa, thus having lived in all three four-letter states in alphabetical order.
During this time, three remarkable sons were born, who are his pride and joy, Jon, Timothy, and Christopher. He coached them all in Little League baseball, midget football, and junior high basketball, winning the Iowa Little League All-Star team title in 1973.
After returning to Iowa in 1963, he worked at the Rock Island Arsenal, where he rose through the ranks to Division Chief.
He spent a lot of time distributing Cubs propaganda and stickers, always with an excuse for their many losses. But finally in 2016, thanks to his niece Karen, he got to see his Cubbies in a World Series game, which they won.
After retiring, he spent 25 years volunteering for Genesis Hospice, Meals on Wheels, and St. Mary's Food Pantry, not to mention daily visits to the gym.
He was a very unique person. Devoted to his Cubs and Green Bay Packers, a loving husband, father, and loyal friend, we will not see his like again any time soon.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother David, and sister-in-law Kathy.
He is survived by wife Jan; sons Jon (Suzy) Wessel, Timothy (Lisa) Wessel, and Chris Wessel; grandchildren Molly (Robbie) Andrews, Mitchell McIntire, Jessica (Charles) Jones, Teryn (Alton) Lynum, Danica Wessel, Matthew (Megan) Wessel, and McKenzie Wessel; eight great-grandchildren; siblings John (Carol) Wessel, Dennis (Sandy) Wessel, Mary (Bill) Keel, and Jeff (Marla) Wessel.
Memorials may be made to the Kahl Home or Genesis Hospice. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the staff at the Kahl Home and Genesis Hospice for the care and support given to Danny.
