Did you know July is UV Awareness Month?

Ultra-Violet(UV) rays come from the sun as well as other artificial light such as tanning beds and plant grow lights. Extended exposure to UV light can be harmful to your body, especially your skin. Some signs of severe UV exposure are sunburn, dehydration, and sun poisoning. Mild to moderate sunburn can appear as red, dry skin. Moderate to severe sunburn can cause blisters and wheals on your skin and can even become more like a third-, second-, or first-degree burn. After being out in the sun for extended periods of time, a good way to see if you are sunburnt is to press your fingers down to your skin. The faster your skin fades from pale back to red, the more sunburnt you are.

Easy ways to avoid harmful UV light exposure are to wear SPF 30+ sunscreen, avoid tanning beds, and remain hydrated if spending long periods of time out in the sun. If you experience a sunburn, ensure to keep the affected skin moist and cool. This can be done by applying cool(not ice-cold) water for the first 20 minutes, then apply moisturizer and/or skin protectant until the burn resolves. If your sunburn seems to be spreading or draining white pus, it is recommended to see a doctor. Whether you’re hitting the beach this summer, or spending time at an outdoor family cookout, it is important to be mindful of the sun’s UV light.

Come visit us at Main at Locust for your sun protection and sunburn needs! - Post created by Wiley, Pharmacy Student

It’s a bittersweet moment for us as we say see you later to our incredible pharmacist, Nicole Hanna. Nicole has been a constant source of care, kindness, and expertise for our patients and team. She’s built lasting relationships, brightened countless days, and truly made a difference in our community.

Nicole recently got engaged (congrats, Nicole! 💍🎉) and is starting a new chapter in Des Moines. While we’re going to miss her tremendously, we’re so excited to see what’s ahead for her. We have no doubt she’ll continue to do amazing things wherever she goes.

Nicole — you’ll always have a home here at Main at Locust Pharmacy. Thank you for everything you’ve done, and we can’t wait to cheer you on in all your future successes. 💙
