Happy Birthday, NAMI Greater Mississippi Valley! NAMI GMV was officially incorporated as a non-profit in Iowa in February 1982, though the organization was formed a few years before then. So we count February 1982 as our "official" birthday, and we celebrate 43 years of helping families in our eight-county service area in eastern Iowa and Western Illinois this month. Pictured are scenes from NAMIWalks 2024.

Basketball star DJ Carton took a break from his successful college career to focus on his mental health. He came back stronger than ever with support from his family, and now plays for the NBA's Toronto Raptors. NAMI's free, nationally developed education and support programs are a lifeline for those in our community who may not have the support DJ did. Donate today by Jan. 31 at namigmv.org/donate to ensure NAMI's programs are available to more people in our community. We have just $2,000 more to raise by Jan. 31 to earn our donor match of $10,000, so give today!

The Secret Sauce: People Who Understand

NAMI education and support programs fill important information gaps for peers and family members. These nationally-developed programs are taught by trained volunteers who have lived experience with a mental health condition. They understand that persons coming to a NAMI program may be feeling helpless, exhausted and somehow to blame. NAMI family education programs teach participants how to cope, communicate and effectively advocate for their loved ones. NAMI peer education programs teach participants how develop a recovery action plan and how to work at staying healthy. NAMI programs are designed to create a supportive environment in which to learn.
