I've been saying it for ages, but let the record show... PLACENTAS DO NOT JUST "EXPIRE".
While the placenta does, indeed go through changes as pregnancy progresses, as this author so succinctly states "the placenta does not undergo a true AGING change".
Many times a "sick" placenta is the result of a sick mama. Blood sugar, volume, and pressure issues can be huge culprits for placental degradation, but these can be related to metabolic or nutritive fallibility, as opposed to just "the way the cookie crumbles".
Placenta age has long been a reason for induction of a post dated (overdue or prolonged) pregnancy, but many in the natural birth world have contested this. Being overdue and even having placental degradation (as long as baby is moving and growing properly) is NOT a reason for induction!
If your placenta is having trouble, rule out metabolic error, but then look at making a lifestyle change that can restore you and baby to health! You truly do have control of your pregnancy and health.
And have a happy, fearless pregnancy and birth!
