Kidney disease can progress quietly. Bloodwork and urinalysis play an important role in identifying changes and helping veterinarians evaluate kidney function. On World Kidney Day, we’re highlighting the role of advanced diagnostics and the expertise of our Internal Medicine team.

Pets are often referred to us by their primary care veterinarians, or first seen by one of our ER doctors when they arrive with concerning symptoms. Our Internal Medicine specialists then work closely with referring veterinarians, our ER team, and pet families to diagnose kidney disease, monitor progression, and create individualized treatment plans that support the best possible quality of life.

When your pet is referred to a board-certified specialist, it means they’re receiving care from a veterinarian who has completed years of additional, focused training beyond veterinary school.

Board certification requires:
Advanced internship training
2-3+ year specialty residency
Publication and case requirements
Passing comprehensive board examinations
Ongoing continuing education

Specialists are trained specifically to manage complex, advanced, or challenging medical conditions.

If you ever have questions about what a referral means or how specialty care works, our team is always here to help guide you.

Tito spent seven days in our 24-hour ICU with Board Certified Emergency and Critical Care Specialist Dr. Brooke Newmans and our dedicated team. Each check-in brought reassurance, each treatment gave hope, and today, Tito is thriving, enjoying sunny days and stroller walks with his mom.
ā€œI can’t imagine going through what I went through at any other place. If I hadn’t brought Tito to AVCC, he wouldn’t have made it,ā€ shares his mom, Trixie.

Capillaria is a group of tiny internal parasites that can affect both cats and dogs, most commonly targeting the bladder, lungs, or nasal passages. Pets become infected from the environment, through contaminated soil, urine, stool, or even by eating infected earthworms.
Many cats show no signs, but symptoms can include blood in the urine or straining to urinate (bladder involvement), coughing or wheezing (lung involvement), or sneezing and nasal discharge (nasal involvement). Diagnosis can be tricky since eggs aren’t always shed consistently, which makes a careful microscopic exam so important.

šŸ”¬ This image shows Capillaria worms identified under the microscope by our lab technician, a not-so-common finding and a great catch by our team.

The good news: Capillaria is treatable with deworming medication, and most pets recover well with proper care.

A February full of care in every form. Valentine’s smiles, brave patients, skilled surgeries, and compassionate moments shared between our doctors, nurses, and the pets we serve. And of course, a little laughter too, like the moment a discharge was accidentally printed on tiny label paper, reminding us that even on the busiest days, there’s always room for humor. Thank you for trusting us with your pets.

Today is . Spaying isn’t just about preventing pregnancy, it’s about protecting your pet’s health.

Pyometra - A life-threatening uterine infection that can occur suddenly and requires emergency surgery.

Mammary (Breast) Cancer - The risk increases with each heat cycle; spaying early significantly lowers this risk.

Unplanned Pregnancies - Leads to health risks for mom, overcrowding, and difficult decisions for owners.

Hormonal Behavior Changes - Heat cycles can cause anxiety, restlessness, vocalizing, and escape-seeking behavior.

Longer, Messier Heat Cycles - Bleeding, swelling, and frequent attention from male dogs.

Higher Emergency Costs - Treating complications like pyometra is far more expensive than preventive spaying.

Spaying is a form of preventive care that can protect your pet’s health and may even save her life.

āš ļø Botulism Risk Alert for Dog Owners
Iguanas, especially dead or cold-stunned ones can pose a serious, life-threatening risk to dogs if ingested.

• Check your yard regularly for dead or immobilized iguanas
• Keep pets away — do not allow dogs to play with, chew on, or eat iguanas
• Remove carcasses promptly using gloves and dispose of them safely
• Act fast: If you suspect your dog ate an iguana, contact your veterinarian immediately. Rapid treatment is critical.
