🕒 Stick to a regular sleep schedule

This week, our “Blue Zone” series takes us to the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica!

People here stay active in their community and mentally sharp throughout their entire lives. The embody the mindset that family and spending time with loved ones is everything and let go of other things that cause them stress. They continue to be physically active by helping their community with tasks such as farming or fixing things even into their later years. Their diet revolves around what is native to the region including corn, beans, rice, fruits, and vegetables and their water that they drink is naturally high in calcium and magnesium. Our last “blue zone” place to explore will be: Loma Linda, California!

Let's talk more about the most brain healthy diet: the Mediterranean diet!

This diet is rooted in plant-based foods including fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Olive oil is the primary source of fat and dairy is limited. Fish and poultry are the protein of choice. Dark chocolate and red wine are allowed in moderation and red meat, and processed foods are saved for special occasions.

Studies show this diet has proven benefits for brain health, heart health, and overall longevity and some research shows it can even slow down cognitive decline and potentially lower your risk of Alzheimer’s disease. When combined with an active, healthy lifestyle, this diet will fuel your body and your brain!

We continue our journey through the “Blue Zones” at: Sardinia, Italy

The lifestyle here is said to be laidback and people prefer to save their energy for things that matter most to them such as family and friends. They have a very strong sense of community and value socialization with the people they care for above all else. Additionally, they keep active through farming and herding sheep in steep mountain terrain, often walking up to five miles a day. They have the highest concentration of centenarian men anywhere in the world! Next week, we will visit out second to last stop in the “blue zone” series: Nicoya, Costa Rica.
