Cheers šŸ» to Dr. Stephen Barthold and Dr. Denise Imai!!! The book, Pathology of Laboratory Rodents and Rabbits, 5th Ed, is finally done. Labor of love, many colleagues and prior trainees have contributed new images and new content to this expanded edition. There’s a new chapter on Chinchillas and an additional section on humanized immunodeficient mice. All proceeds go to support students and residents at CPL so if you buy the book, know that you are supporting the next generation of veterinarians, pathologists and laboratory animal specialists. šŸŽ‰ 🐭

Congratulations to the graduating SVM class of 2025 and specifically, to our own Dr. Mieko Temple!!!! Thank you for being a crucial team member, keeping our necropsy and microbiology service active off-hours and on weekends. Your commitment has allowed us to provide timely and accurate results that protect the research enterprise here, at UC Davis. Oh, and you are also an incredibly talented artist. Dr. Laura Janke, Director of the Comparative Pathology Core at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital joins us to share her work modeling pediatric lymphoma and leukemia in mouse models at the UCD School of Medicine Grand Rounds and at Biomedical Research Awareness Day. Dr. Tania Carvalho, Head of the Histopathology platform at Champalimaud Foundation in Lisbon, chose to spend her 4-month sabbatical with us. We are so fortunate to be hosting these two powerhouses!!

This past Friday, graduate students in the Pathology, Microbiology, & Immunology (PMI) 202 course participated in a hands-on mouse necropsy wet lab at CPL. This interactive session provided a valuable opportunity for students to ask discipline-specific questions and deepen their scientific understanding through direct experience. CPL remains committed to educating and training the future of comparative pathology scientists.

We continue to train the next generation of scientists. These graduate students are working to restore vision in patients with retinal disease, fix congenital diseases with gene editing before babies are born, find better treatments for breast cancer and biomarkers for triple negative tumors, understand the impact of gut microbiome health on brain function, improve our immunologic responses to bacterial infections, understand the impact of the jumping gene (L1) in heritable diseases of dogs and people, and stop the transmission of devastating infectious diseases from domestic animals to endangered wildlife. Science is important. Science impacts every facet of our lives and our planet. Science and scientists deserve our support.

At the annual meeting of the Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities (ABRF), a key organization that promotes the advancement and dissemination of best practices for research and resource Core facilities. Members represent more than 400 laboratories and administrative offices in government, academia, research, industry and commercial settings. Now, more than ever, we need to understand how to support our research community, how to continue to promote scientific excellence, and how we, as a community, can elevate each other. Heading off to a discussion of which model works better and when, centralized or distributed administration. These topics may sound dry but they will shape the future of shared scientific resources.

At the UC Davis ACVP Alumni & Friends Reception, inspired alumni and friends donated to the Peter C Kennedy endowment. PCK supports veterinary pathologists in graduate research training programs who are studying the spontaneous diseases of veterinary species. This is one of the only funding sources of its kind and critical to supporting the advancement of veterinary science. As a grateful former recipient of the endowment, Dr. Denise Imai-Leonard is the faculty sponsor and event host. If you would like to attend the reception next year, please contact her directly. See you in NOLA!

The Lab Animal and Research Club visited us this morning, for a mouse necropsy wet lab to understand not only the process, but to learn the skills and different approaches that apply to diagnostic versus experimental necropsies.

Students Training in Advanced Research (STAR) is an intramurally and extramurally funded program supporting the development of veterinary scientists. We are proud to host Sonyia Williams, a second year veterinary medical student, this summer. She is studying the genetic and cutaneous microbiome conditions that influence atypical Corynebacterium bovis outbreaks in athymic n**e mice. Her conclusions will shape management decisions for sentinel programs and immunodeficient mice.
