Keeping up with your furnace and pipes
Is your furnace keeping up with this cold? π₯Ά We want to share a few tips to help keep your home warm, safe, and your HVAC system running smoothly π
π₯ Thermostat
Avoid turning your thermostat way down at night. Keeping a consistent temperature helps prevent your system from overworking and reduces the risk of frozen pipes. Also, check those batteries!
π₯ Check or change your furnace filter
Dirty filters restrict airflow and can cause your furnace to shut down. If you canβt remember the last time you changed it, now is a great time to check! π«£ 1β wide filters need to be changed monthly.
βοΈ Check for drafts
Close curtains or blinds at night to help trap heat inside. Clear plastic window insulation kits can also add noticeable warmth.
βοΈ Frozen pipe prevention
Let faucets drip slightly during extreme cold and open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air in. Disconnect outdoor hoses and shut off exterior water lines if possible.
π₯ Keep vents clear
Make sure supply and return vents are not blocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains.
Blocked airflow = less heat + more strain on your system.
π₯ Furnace intake & exhaust pipes
Furnace intake and exhaust pipes (usually white PVC) must always be kept clear of snow and ice. Never cap, block, or cover these pipes as this can cause your system to shut down or create unsafe conditions. Make sure no snow is drifting up to vents periodically.
π₯ Carbon monoxide detector
A properly working carbon monoxide detector + a properly working furnace = peace of mind.
β οΈ It never hurts to have a clean and check! We recommend a combustion analysis during routine maintenance. A combustion analysis is a test we perform on your furnace to make sure itβs burning fuel safely and efficiently. It measures things like oxygen levels, carbon monoxide, and exhaust gases to confirm everything is operating up to manufacturer specs.
If you notice your furnace is running constantly, this can be normal during extreme cold. Contact us if you notice abnormal smells, strange noises, or no heat at all. Early calls can help prevent bigger issues. ππΌ We are here to help!
Stay warm and stay safe! π
