Managing expectations is a difficult but important conversation. It is actually one of the most important parts, because hospice is often misunderstood as a full-time nursery or care service, it is important to clarify that it is a support system designed to supplement, and not to replace, the care provided by family or a facility.

Hospice patients do not have to sign a "Do not Resuscitate" order. Some people may assume this, but a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order is NEVER required during hospice care at any time. A hospice patient’s only requirement to qualify for care is that they have received a prognosis of six months or less to live.

Hospice and Palliative care have some key differences. Patients with chronic and debilitating illness, as well as their providers, should be aware of their specialized options for care. Hospice and palliative care are often confused for the same type of treatment because both provide comfort care for patients wherever they call home. However, there is one key difference in these types of care. Hospice care is comfort care for patients with life-limiting illness that provides treatment for symptom relief— not to cure the illness. Palliative care, on the other hand, provides comfort AND treatment for the illness.

WHAT'S GOING AROUND?— Each week, we ask our ER providers what ailments and conditions are commonly being seen in our Emergency Room.

THIS WEEK, Dr. Glenn DeLong, an emergency physician at McLaren Macomb, reports:

Influenza
After a slight decline, the volume of patients testing positive for the flu has returned, remaining steadily high with patients experiencing a fever, persistent cough, fatigue, and muscle aches, though most patients have been experiencing mild symptoms not requiring hospitalization.

COVID-19
While not has prevalent has the flu, cases of COVID-19 have maintained a moderately high level, though much like the flu, patients have largely been spared of severe symptoms.

Weather-related conditions
The extreme cold has caused several patients to seek care for various levels of frostbite, while many others continue to present to the emergency and trauma center with bone breaks and fractures stemming from a slip-and-fall in the icy conditions.

Chronic flare-ups
Extreme weather conditions keeping people indoors might also keep them from attending appointments that help manage chronic conditions, leading to an increase in ER visits for complications, often for conditions affecting the lungs.

❄️ Winter Weather Update ❄️

Very cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills are expected across Michigan through the weekend. These conditions can increase the risk of frostbite, hypothermia, and difficult travel, especially during overnight and early morning hours.

We want to help our community stay safe and prepared during the extreme cold. A few simple steps can make a big difference:

Cold Weather Safety Tips
• Limit time outdoors and dress in warm layers
• Watch for signs of frostbite (numbness or pale skin) and hypothermia (shivering, confusion, or extreme fatigue)
• Use space heaters, grills, and generators safely to prevent carbon monoxide exposure
• Take breaks and avoid overexertion when shoveling snow
• Check in on older adults, neighbors, and loved ones, and keep pets indoors
• If you must travel, keep your gas tank full and carry warm clothing, blankets, and a phone charger

For more information on how to prepare before, during, and after an emergency or disaster, visit michigan.gov/miready.

Please take care, plan ahead, and stay warm.
