Good habits of clean eating in a calorie deficit and regular exercise can make a significant amount of change in a short period of time. Consistency matters!

Are you ready to make some some health and wellness changes in your life? Here are some quick tips to help get you started!

1) Find an accountability partner or group of like minded people that are on the same journey. It is fun to see progress on an individual level but why would you not want to have your friends and family enjoining the same benefits right along with you.

If you don’t have these people in your life, please reach out to us as we would love to help.

2) Start with Whole Foods! Simple single ingredient foods should be the majority of the food you consume. It doesn’t have the be all but definately the majority.

3) Priority #1 in your food choices has to be protein. This is true for people of all ages. A good goal is to hit a target of 1 gram per pound of the weight you would like to be. For example a person wanting to be 150 lbs should aim to consume 150 grams of protein daily. This intake should primarily come from whole food sources. This can be hard for some to hit and in this senario a protein supplement can be helpful.

4) Exercise is an important tool but should not be the focus over nutrition. Also the type of exercise plays a key role.

5) Start building exercise into your daily routine with a form that you enjoy. If you like to walk then walk, if you like to run then run, if you like to lift then lift. Eventually we want to do a combination of exercise types with resistance training playing a key role!

6) More is not always better. Long sessions of cardio like running or biking is not going to help you lose more weight than strength training over the long term even though it burns more calories during the workout.

Cardio can be catabolic and will often cause the body to break down muscle tissue along with fat. We don’t want this. Resistance training is anabolic and will stimulate the body to grow more muscle. The more lean muscle tissue we have more calories we burn at rest which means our metabolism speeds up.

7) Resistance training 101:
If you are a beginner start with simple bodyweight exercises like the core 5: Squats, dead lifts, rows, bench press and overhead press. These are all compound movements that will give you the best bang for your buck.

Begin with 3 sets of each exercise for 8-12 repetitions just 2 times per week. As the exercise gets easier you can progressively add weight.

Soreness that prohibits you from activity the next day is not an indicator of a good workout. It is an indicator that the muscles were over worked. Light soreness ok but again more is not better. You should be feeling good by the next time you work out.

8)Walking is a great exercise! Depending where you are at currently at, set a progressive goal of 5k steps then 7.5k steps then 10k+!

9) Be patient! Results don’t happen overnight. Stay commited and trust the process.

10) Have fun with it! You dont have to be perfect! These are all places to start making progress. They don’t have to all be done at one but once you can lock in and start making them a part of your routine just watch what happens! You are going to love the way you look and feel!
