February is Black History Month and a perfect time to engage in meaningful conversations. The Montgomery County Addiction Mental Health and Addiction Services board states on their website: Although mental and behavioral health conditions do not discriminate based on race, color, gender or identity; African Americans sometimes experience more severe forms of mental and behavioral health conditions due to barriers such as their zip code, economic resources, and more. African Americans are actually 10% more likely to experience serious psychological distress, according to the Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health.

This, last week of January, is a time set aside each year to thank those in our facilities that organize, create, engage, and inspire the activities enjoyed by our patients as well as our staff.
We, the Haven of Dayton team, would like to thank our Activity Director, Kelly Shock, *on the left, and her team for making an impact in our patient and staff experiences every single day!
Kelly, Laquita, Mary, Jacob, Katie, and Valencia - thank you for being the people who make lives better just by showing up and being you!!
Join us on Thursday at noon. Sarah will be introducing us to Preston Moore, Host of the High Cost of Anonymity Podcast.
In his podcast, he talks about the high cost on both individuals and communities when people don't feel comfortable sharing their experiences with their mental health, addiction, and family struggles. Preston wants to change this and he believes we do this by sharing our stories. We look forward to hearing his: 19 years of recovery from drug and alcohol addiction have had the biggest impact on his life, and believes everything in his life, both good and bad, has stemmed from getting sober.
Preston is truly an advocate for mental health. He believes we can normalize addiction, mental health and life’s challenges by sharing our personal stories. Preston and his guests share their stories as well as resources. He makes a point to share both the “good”, all the things we love for people to see; and as well as the “ugly”, the stuff we’d rather keep hidden. It is in sharing the ugly and hard bits, that we can create real change.
Check out his podcast at:
Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/65h0V990cXBZZ9Op20hYjA
We asked Preston for a piece of advice: “The best way to help your family, work team or someone close to you is to change you. When you change yourself, everyone else around you changes by proxy. I’m a big fan of using support groups, counselors, therapists, and unbiased third parties. In other words, someone that doesn’t have a direct benefit in your decision making.”
Preston also does outreach for Columbus Springs Hospitals as a Community & School Liaison. He also loves the UFC, Texas A&M Football, his English wife, his 4 yr old son named Austin, coffee and ice cream… and he’s a bit of a sneaker head.
Join us on Thursday. This will be a fun and important conversation!
