I make quilts to donate so rarely know who receives them. However, today I was able to present one of my quilts in person to a woman I’ve never met before and it was such a choice experience for me. On Dec 9 this woman is going to have one leg, toes from the other foot, all fingers from one hand, and all but one finger from her other hand, amputated. The quilt I had recently finished ended up with two blocks turned the wrong way. I struggled with whether to repair it when I learned about this woman and knew the quilt needed to go to her, exactly as it was. Today when I presented the quilt to her and her husband I told them two of the blocks were not going the right direction and challenged them to find them. I asked if it would be any less warm or comforting with those blocks not being perfect and of course they said no. I told them in time it would be the same with the loss of her leg, fingers and toes. It wouldn’t change who she is and the impact she will have on the lives of those who surround her. With all the quilts I have given away, I have never before experienced the feelings I had today. I KNOW her feelings of loss because I lost all use of my left arm 57 years ago and I have learned that I’m still an ok person capable of serving others.

I found a line with just one person ahead of me and began organizing my items on the conveyor. After placing my items, I look up to see that the person ahead of me was an elderly woman. She was paying for her items with change and wanted to purchase each separately. Part of me, the part that had a long day at work, the part of me who had a 1 1/2 year old having a melt down in the cart, the part that had set an unnecessary timeline for Target and getting home, was frustrated with this woman and the inconvenience she had placed on me.
BUT then I watched the young employee with this woman. I watched him help her count her change, ever so tenderly taking it from her shaking hands. I listened to him repeatedly saying “yes, mam” to her. When she asked if she had enough to buy a reusable bag, he told her she did and went two lines over to get one for her and then repackaged her items. Never once did this employee huff, gruff or roll his eyes. He was nothing but patient and kind.
As I was watching him, I saw that Eloise was too. She was standing next to the woman, watching the employee count the change. I realized I hadn’t been inconvenienced at all. That my daughter was instead witnessing kindness and patience and being taught this valuable lesson by a complete stranger; furthermore, I realized that I too needed a refresher on this lesson.
When the woman was finished, the employee began ringing up my items and thanked me for my patience. I then thanked him for teaching us patience and kindness by his treatment of that elderly woman. And although my timeline for target was askew, when he was finished I pushed my cart through the store trying to find the manager. I wanted her to know of the employee’s, kindness and patience, and how much it meant to me. After tracking her down and sharing the story with her, we left Target with a cart full of consumable items, but what is more a heart full of gratitude for such an invaluable lesson.
If you are ever in the Glendale Target, give Ishmael a smile and a nod. The world could use more people like him.

“Tonight, we went out to eat at Cracker Barrel. As we were almost finished, we noticed an elderly woman sitting all alone, drinking a milk and waiting for her meal. A million thoughts went through my mind. She looked so very lonely…Is she widowed? Where is her family? Why is she at a restaurant at almost 8 p.m. (which is stereotypically like midnight in old people time). Also seated next to us were three big, burly, middle-aged, blue collar, hardworking, hungry men. I asked Tom if we should buy her dinner or if we should go sit with her...then one of our boys did/said something which momentarily distracted us but when we looked back up, these big burly guys were moving the frail elderly woman to their table. We continued to watch them interact. The woman was smiling from ear to ear, her face all lit up and she was just a-talking like she hadn’t talked to another human in a very long time. I seriously was choked up, as was Tom. As we left, we left them some money for their meal and Tom thanked them for restoring our faith in humanity...I snapped a picture but really, I will forever remember this moment.”

While I was in Liberty, I noticed a gentleman loading up his cart with an unusual amount of milk. Curiosity got the best of me, so I asked him why. That’s when I met Rick—a retired Marine with a heart of gold.
Rick wasn’t stocking up for himself. Instead, he was on a mission to make sure no child in his neighborhood goes hungry. He buys milk and other groceries regularly, quietly delivering them to families who need them most. He told me some parents can’t make it to the store or pick up free lunches for their kids, so he steps in—without expecting anything in return.
This wasn’t his first time, and it certainly won’t be his last. Rick’s selflessness and dedication to his community are the definition of true heroism. I told him that good Karma will surely come his way—because kindness like his never goes unnoticed.

This boy rode the bus to graduation, went on stage without the support of this family, with no one to hug him or congratulate him.
After graduation he returned to the bus stop, his back covered in sweat, but he was still happy. His name is Corey Patrick and we are all proud of you.

Picture of Shirley Jones at age 18 when she was crowned Miss Pittsburgh on August 5, 1952. Shirley Jones was born on March 31, 1934, in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, to Methodist parents Marjorie (née Williams), a homemaker, and Paul Jones, owners of the Jones Brewing Company. Jones' paternal grandfather William B. "Stoney" Jones, a Welsh immigrant, won the brewery in a friendly game of poker in Sutersville, Pennsylvania. She was named after child star Shirley Temple.

Jones says that many people have incorrectly assumed that her middle name was named after vaudeville and film legend Mae West, but Jones was actually named after her aunt. Coincidentally, the first star Jones ever met was West, who was performing at the Twin Coaches supper club in Rostraver around 1954.

The family later moved to the small nearby town of Smithton, Pennsylvania , because the Jones Brewing Co. was located there. Jones began singing at the age of six in the Methodist Church choir and took voice lessons from Ralph Lewando. Upon attending South Huntingdon High School in Ruffs Dale, Pennsylvania, she participated in school plays.

In her six decades in show business, she has starred as wholesome characters in a number of musical films, such as Oklahoma! (1955), Carousel (1956), and The Music Man (1962). She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing a vengeful pr******te in Elmer Gantry (1960). She played the lead role of Shirley Partridge, the widowed mother of five children, in the musical situation-comedy television series The Partridge Family (1970–1974), which co-starred her real-life stepson, David Cassidy, son of Jack Cassidy.
