I was standing in the empty Halloween costume aisle at Target, trying not to cry. Every good costume was either gone or too expensive. Then my eight-year-old daughter looked at me and said, “Mom, maybe we could just make one?”

It’s been three months since my divorce, and I’m still learning how to make money stretch. Halloween used to be my ex-husband Jeremy’s thing. He’d take Sophie to a fancy store and buy her whatever she wanted. But this year, it was just me, a $20 budget, and no idea how to be the “crafty” mom.

Sophie wanted to be a rain cloud. I thought it was impossible until I remembered some leftover polyester stuffing from an old project. We found a yellow raincoat at Goodwill for eight dollars, and blue felt and ribbon at the dollar store. The total cost was twelve dollars.

That night, we worked together at the kitchen table. Sophie glued the stuffing onto an old party hat while I cut out felt raindrops. She was so focused. For the first time since the divorce, we were creating something together without her asking about Daddy.

When I posted a photo of her costume on a parenting group in the Tedooo app, other moms loved it. Some even asked if I could make costumes for their kids! I ended up selling two more cloud costumes that week.

On Halloween night, Sophie’s face lit up as everyone complimented her “creative” outfit. She proudly told everyone, “My mom made it!” I almost cried again — this time from happiness.

Sometimes the best things come when you can’t just buy them. Jeremy can keep his credit cards. We’ve got imagination.

When Courtney was pregnant, her doctor told her that her baby would have Down syndrome and strongly suggested that she terminate the pregnancy.
Two years after giving birth to Emersyn, Courtney wrote a letter to that doctor. This is what she said:
*"A friend recently shared her experience with her prenatal specialist. During her sonograms, the doctor would comment, ‘He’s perfect.’ When her son was born with Down syndrome, she visited the doctor again. He looked at her little boy and said, ‘I told you. He’s perfect.’
Her story tore me apart. While I was grateful for my friend’s experience, it filled me with sorrow for what I should have had. I wish you had been that doctor for me. I came to you during one of the most difficult times of my life—terrified, anxious, and in complete despair. I didn’t yet know the truth about my baby, and that’s what I desperately needed from you.
Instead of support and encouragement, you suggested terminating our child. I told you her name, and you asked again if we understood how our quality of life would be affected by having a child with Down syndrome. You suggested we reconsider continuing the pregnancy.
From that first visit, we dreaded every appointment. The hardest period of my life was made nearly unbearable because you never told me the truth: my child was perfect.
I am not angry. I am not bitter. I am simply sad. Sad that the tiny, beating hearts you see every day don’t always fill you with awe. Sad that the intricate miracle of fingers, toes, lungs, eyes, and ears doesn’t always make you pause. Sad that you were so wrong to suggest a baby with Down syndrome would diminish our lives. Most of all, I am heartbroken that you might still say that to another mother today.
But I am mostly sad that you will never have the privilege of knowing my daughter, Emersyn.
Emersyn has not only enriched our lives—she has touched thousands of hearts. She has given us joy, purpose, laughter, and love beyond words. She has opened our eyes to true beauty and pure love.
So my prayer is that no other mother will endure what I did. My prayer is that you, too, will see true beauty and pure love in every sonogram. And my prayer is that when you see the next baby with Down syndrome nestled in her mother’s womb, you will look at that mother and tell her the truth: ‘Your child is absolutely perfect.’"*
Every child is perfect 💞

Hi, my name is Macey Brietenback. I’m almost 21 years old.
For most of my life, I believed the world was a cruel and terrible place. I saw so much hate, pain, and evil in people that I started to lose faith in humanity.

Let me tell you why — and how that changed.

I was born with a rare and incurable disease called visceral neuropathy with pseudo-obstruction. It means my stomach and intestines didn’t work properly. I couldn’t eat or digest food, so I had to be fed through tubes. Later, I was put on TPN, which gave me the nutrients I needed to stay alive, but I still couldn’t eat or drink anything.

My stomach was always swollen, and I lived in constant pain. I spent almost all my time in bed or in hospitals. By the time I was 17, my organs were failing. I had to get regular antibiotics because my intestines leaked stool into my body. During one surgery, doctors even put my intestines in backward — and I ended up vomiting stool more than 20 times a day for six years.

Doctors didn’t believe me. They called me a “drug seeker” even though I was just trying to survive. Only my family believed me. I felt alone, hopeless, and disgusted by how cruel people could be.

By 16, I had no friends left. No one wanted to hang out with the “sick girl.” I lost all faith in people and thought the world was full of selfishness and pain.

Then, when I was 19, everything changed.
I received a life-saving four-organ transplant.

It’s been a year and a half now — and my life is completely different. I can finally do things I never could before. I have friends. I smile every day.

And most importantly, I’ve learned that there are still good people in this world.
A 12–15-year-old girl and her family chose to donate her organs — and they gave me the gift of life.

To every organ donor and family out there — thank you. You give people like me a second chance.

Now I wake up each day with gratitude, faith, and a smile.

Holiday Eating Tips (Simple & Fun Version)

Skip the carrot sticks.
If you see carrots on a holiday buffet, leave. Go find a party serving rum balls instead — that’s real holiday spirit!

Drink lots of eggnog.
It’s only around once a year, so enjoy it while you can! Don’t count calories — it’s Christmas, not a diet camp.

Love the gravy.
Gravy isn’t a side dish, it’s a lifestyle. Pour it all over your mashed potatoes — make a gravy volcano and enjoy every bite.

Whole milk only.
If mashed potatoes are made with skim milk, skip them. That’s like buying a fancy car with no engine.

Don’t eat before the party.
The goal is to eat free food — lots of it! Save your appetite for the good stuff.

No exercise allowed.
December is for naps, not workouts. You’ll need rest after carrying that plate of food and your cup of eggnog.

Guard the cookies.
Find the best treats (like Santa-shaped frosted cookies) and stay close. Once they’re gone, they’re gone forever.

Have all the pies.
Apple, pumpkin, mincemeat — take a slice of each. If you don’t like one, double up on another. It’s a holiday, go wild!

Skip the fruitcake.
It’s full of calories but not joy. Have some standards.

Final rule:
If you leave the table feeling too comfortable, you didn’t eat enough. Start again — January is coming soon!

Remember this motto:
“Life isn’t about arriving perfectly preserved — it’s about sliding in sideways with chocolate in one hand and wine in the other, yelling, ‘Woo hoo! What a ride!’”

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Lisa Nagengast flew from Florida to Omaha to help her brother during his risky spinal surgery. Thankfully, the surgery went well, and he was allowed to go home two days later. Lisa made sure he was comfortable before flying back to Florida, thinking everything was fine.

But before her plane even landed, Lisa got a voicemail from her brother. He was in terrible pain, his surgical wound was bleeding and oozing fluid, and his leg had gone numb. He couldn’t drive, couldn’t get a ride, and couldn’t call an ambulance because the VA hadn’t approved it.

Desperate to help, Lisa called the number her brother gave her, thinking it was his social worker. A man named Jason said he’d find a driver to help. Soon after, a man named Zack called and asked how she got the number. When Lisa said her brother gave it to her, Zack paused and said, “Umm, this is Jimmy John’s.”

It turned out she had called a sandwich shop by mistake. But instead of hanging up, Zack a Jimmy John’s delivery driver actually went to her brother’s house and drove him to the hospital to get help.

Lisa was overwhelmed with gratitude for Jason and Zack’s kindness. She shared the story online, encouraging everyone in Columbus, Nebraska to visit that Jimmy John’s and thank them for their compassion.

I'm standing in this thrift store, holding my breath I can’t believe what I’m seeing.

My Aunt Rosemary was everything my mom wasn’t. Mom liked beige sweaters and quiet voices; Rosemary wore sequined jackets to the grocery store and laughed loud enough for the whole street to hear. She was wild, colorful, and full of life the kind of person who could turn an ordinary day into something magical.

We became best friends when I turned forty. That’s when I realized I’d been living safe and dull like my mom instead of bold and bright, like Rosemary. For the past few years, I’d been helping her run her vintage shop on the Tedooo app. She taught me how to spot hidden gems at garage sales and how to turn old things into something new and beautiful.

One of her greatest creations was a fur coat. She found it at an estate sale, torn and sad-looking, and spent weeks transforming it into a rainbow dream with fabric dye and fierce determination. “Honey,” she said, “if you’re gonna wear fur, make it fabulous.”

Two months ago, she passed away suddenly a heart attack at sixty-eight. No goodbye.

Last week, I was wandering through Hidden Treasures, still lost in grief, when I saw it. Her coat. Hanging there. Fifteen dollars. Someone had donated it, not knowing its story.

My hands shook as I paid for it. When I got home, I shared the story on her old Tedooo page, in one of her favorite crafting groups. The comments poured in people who’d bought from her, learned from her, and loved her spirit.

I’m keeping the coat. Every time I wear it, I’ll remember her and remind myself that life’s too short for beige sweaters and soft whispers. Sometimes, you’ve just got to wear purple fur and laugh loud enough for the neighbors to hear.

When a cat falls from a tree, it doesn’t fight the fall it relaxes. Because it lets go, it lands softly and safely.
But if the cat tried to resist the fall, it would become stiff and likely hurt itself when it hit the ground.

In the same way, Taoist philosophy says that life is like falling from the moment we are born, we are already in motion, and nothing can stop it.
So instead of living in constant tension and trying to hold on to things that are also “falling,” we should learn to relax and flow with life just like the cat.

I bought a sleeping bag and a few other things for a homeless man who often visits the area where I work. I also gave him a stuffed dog so he would have some company. He told me it was his first stuffed toy ever. Some of my coworkers helped out too we all chipped in to get him some basic supplies. In a few weeks, I plan to buy him a tent to make his life a little easier.

Today on my flight to Boise, I witnessed something truly heartwarming.
An elderly man was seated in my row, with a kind woman beside him.
Though our flight landed over an hour late and the plane was completely full, everyone stayed calm and patient as the man took his time to stand and walk out.

A few Delta employees who had boarded to clean the plane immediately stopped their work to help him to his feet.
As he slowly made his way down the aisle, not a single person rushed or complained.
More than half the passengers were waiting behind us yet no one moved until he was safely in his wheelchair.

It wasn’t just one act of kindness it was a shared moment of humanity.
Everyone, from the passengers to the Delta crew, showed compassion, patience, and respect.
This was a reminder that kindness can spread, especially when people come together to show it.
