Today is ! In honor of this celebration, we asked some of our doctors at who consistently receive high praise from patients about their patient care philosophy. This post features surgeon Chris Schneider, M.D. Schneider is also an assistant professor of surgery with the Boonshoft School of Medicine.
What is something essential to patient care?
⬇️ ⬇️
“Being able to put myself in the patient's shoes, understanding it is more than an illness, but a person with that illness. Recognizing that each patient has a family, friends, a life, that are impacted by their illness or need, and to be empathetic. Sometimes what the "textbook" says just doesn't fit for an individual and understanding where each individual is coming from allows us to partner with them in their care rather than dictate to them.
What is one thing you intentionally do for your patients?
⬇️ ⬇️
“Listen. Take time and hear their story. Ask questions to understand where people are coming from and what they need. I can be a much bigger part of their health, life, and recovery by just listening.”
What motivated you to go into medicine?
⬇️ ⬇️
“A desire to be a part of the community I live in, and contribute. I really want to be a resource locally for anyone with needs, even complex surgical needs, so that they can stay local and have the best care.”
