Veterans at the Community Living Center (CLC) had some good company today. Oakwood High School football players and coaches spent a couple of hours with Veterans in the Lincoln Estates and Patton’s Place neighborhoods. It’s the team’s first season without a military game on the schedule, so the coaches wanted the players to interact with Veterans. They talked about their hobbies, cars, sports and other topics. Head Coach Jay Lane said the Veterans lit up and were excited to tell their stories. Lineman Finn McCarty said it was “great to meet new people and learn about life.” Director Jennifer DeFrancesco stopped by to meet the team, thank them for visiting the Veterans and wish them luck this season.

The Dayton VA Homeless Program and community collaborators kicked off a three-day "Surge" Wednesday. Specialized outreach teams are going to 16 counties looking for homeless Veterans and providing same-day access to housing and support services. With an “all hands on deck” approach, teams will connect Veterans directly to emergency, transitional, or permanent housing options. The teams packed up canvassing bags filled with necessities and will give them out to homeless Veterans each day.

Welcome back home and congratulations on a very successful National Veterans Wheelchair Games for the 15 Veteran athletes from Dayton VA who participated this year in Minneapolis. They brought home the gold, 24 gold medals in fact! They also won nine (9) Silver and nine (9) Bronze medals (minus Boccia II, Disc Golf, and Air Pistol results that have not been posted). Congratulations! We're proud of you all. The games will be played next year in Detroit.
