Early transfer of complex wound patients to settings with high-quality wound care can help reduce length of stay, readmissions, and care costs. Kindred Hospitals, which provides specialized acute care for medically complex patients, offers an advanced wound care program built on patient-centeredness, formal wound care training, team-based treatment, and standard protocols. These characteristics make Kindred a high-quality care setting for complex wound patients.

As patients age and develop an increasing number of comorbidities, including diabetes and obesity, they are more prone to developing wounds and to experiencing longer, more complex recoveries.[1] Chronic wound patients also often experience psychological side effects such as loneliness and depressio...

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Let’s take a moment to focus on the 5 C’s of Mental Health—simple, powerful habits that support emotional well-being:

1. Connection – Spend time with people who uplift you. Strong social ties can reduce stress and boost your mood.
2. Clarity – Take time to reflect. Journaling or mindfulness can help you understand your thoughts and feelings better.
3. Coping – Learn healthy ways to manage stress—like exercise, breathing exercises, or talking to a therapist.
4. Control – Focus on what you can influence. Let go of the things outside your control to reduce anxiety.
5. Compassion – Be kind to yourself and others. We’re all navigating challenges—grace and empathy go a long way.

Your mental health matters. This month—and every month—take steps to care for your mind like you care for your body.

On this Memorial Day, we pause to reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their bravery has secured the freedoms we hold dear, and their memory lives on in our hearts and communities.

Let us never forget the true cost of freedom, and may we strive each day to be worthy of the sacrifices made on our behalf.

Tammy is a retired police dispatcher, and her husband, Terry, is a retired Air Force Tech Sergeant. In her free time, Tammy enjoys spending time with her mother (Barbara), daughter (Megan), and granddaughter (Leila). She gives back by volunteering at the Elks and has always loved traveling with her husband and friends.

In early February, Tammy and Terry embarked on a Caribbean cruise, joining twelve of their friends from the Elks Club. Not long into their adventure, Tammy began experiencing a headache, followed by a loss of consciousness. She was intubated on the ship and transported to a hospital in Key West, where she was diagnosed with a ruptured brain aneurysm. She was then airlifted to a hospital in Miami, where she underwent surgery to relieve the pressure in her brain and received a tracheostomy and PEG tube.

Tammy was flown back home and arrived at Kindred Hospital Dayton in March for tracheostomy weaning, as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapies.
Terry and Barbara, along with her brother Bill, visited every day and encouraged Tammy to participate in her therapy. She worked very hard to regain her strength and the use of her limbs.

Shortly after arriving at Kindred, Tammy was weaned from the ventilator and began breathing on her own. She can now speak and eat again. She is also able to sit and stand, and she continues to make progress each day with the help of the excellent therapy team at Kindred.

Through the love and support of her family, her own motivation, and the dedication of the staff at Kindred, Tammy has made a remarkable recovery and now looks forward to a bright future.

She is being discharged to a rehabilitation facility to continue her recovery journey and shared, "By God’s grace, who heard the prayers from family, friends and strangers around the globe and the exceptional care of Kindred’s outstanding staff, I look forward to rehabilitation and finally being home. A true miracle."
