"How effective are we?"

Last week, a patient texted us and asked, “How effective are you at treating SI joint problems?” I replied, “We see many people with SI joint issues, and we’ve had a lot of satisfied patients. But you should be the one to decide how effective we are.”

For those who may not know, the SI joint is the connection between your spine and pelvis, and it is a common source of low back and hip pain. At Your Neighbor Physical Therapy, we address SI joint pain with joint manipulations, soft tissue work, assisted stretching, and targeted exercises. Depending on your tolerance level, we may also use advanced dry needling or cupping techniques.

No matter what techniques we use, our focus is always on whether you feel better. Our approach is patient-centered and results-driven. And if we find that physical therapy isn’t helping you, we’ll be honest and let you know.

Do you struggle with SI joint pain? If so, come see us, and you can be the judge of how effective we are.

"Why Choose Us Even Without Insurance?"

Your Neighbor Physical Therapy does not accept health insurance, and people often wonder why patients would choose us when they could use their insurance for physical therapy. One reason is simple: we provide better care. We use hands-on techniques like manual therapy, joint manipulation, and soft tissue work, etc. We also spend more one-on-one time with each patient, which helps them recover faster. Per our Google reviews, patients often describe that we “take the time” to listen to them.

Of course, some patients prefer to stay within their insurance, and that can work just fine. But if you are not getting the results you want, consider coming to us. There is no doubt that we provide higher quality care.

“When It Slips Out in the Clinic, and It’s Not a Disc”

All the content here is inspired by true events that happened in the clinic. I was asked if patients ever pass gas while I treat them, maybe during a manipulation or while stretching their legs.

The answer is yes, and for me it happens about once a year, so not very often. But when it does, it can be pretty awkward. To set the record straight, the smell does not bother me. Back in grad school I worked as a nursing assistant in a nursing home, and more than half of my job involved cleaning elderly residents. On top of that I am a father of three, so a little gas leakage does not faze me at all.

The truth is the patient is usually the one who feels embarrassed. So how can I make them feel less uncomfortable? I have asked many of my physical therapy colleagues, and the general consensus is to completely ignore it no matter how loud it is. In other words, just pretend nothing happened.

But what if the patient says “excuse me”?

What would you do? Let me know in the comments below 👇

“Struggling with headache?”

One thing we do really well at Your Neighbor Physical Therapy is taking care of patients with headaches and migraines. From years of experience, we’ve found that many headaches are actually the result of unresolved chronic neck pain. This is known as a cervicogenic headache. Once the neck issue is addressed, the headaches often improve significantly.

Imagine going from having a headache every day to just once a week, and continuing to improve. That’s a major boost in quality of life, and we have many stories like that. Just check out our Google reviews.

If you or someone you know is dealing with chronic headaches, reach out to us. You don’t have to keep suffering.

"Got the Cringe for Needles?"

Your Neighbor Physical Therapy has always been known for providing the highest quality of dry needling treatment. Instead of just knowing how to perform dry needling, we are actually certified in it through IDN (Integrative Dry Needling), one of the most widely recognized dry needling education providers. We use it daily because our care is not restricted by insurance, which makes us even more proficient since we apply these techniques all the time.

However, we understand that dry needling is not for everyone, because at the end of the day, it still involves needles. An article in Times Magazine reports that about 16 percent of adults have a fear of needles. If you cringe at the thought of needles, we offer plenty of alternatives to dry needling. Cupping, kinesiotaping, and IASTM (Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) can all be very effective for treating soft tissue impairments and decrease pain. And do not forget about manual therapy, which makes up more than 90 percent of a typical session.

If you have regular joint problems, reach out to us. If you have complicated joint problems, reach out to us. Addressing musculoskeletal problems is our specialty.

"Many options for your stubborn joint problems"

Combination treatments are well-documented in medicine. For instance, in cancer treatment, doctors often prescribe a cocktail of drugs rather than a single one. Similarly, managing common issues like high blood pressure involves medications, diet modifications, and exercise. Joint problems are no exception.

Each joint problem is unique, requiring a case-by-case assessment. At Your Neighbor Physical Therapy, we offer a variety of treatments tailored to address your specific joint issues, ensuring optimal results. Whether you're dealing with stubborn arthritis or persistent low back pain, give us a call, and we'll work with you to find the best treatment options.

"Stop Dropping Tools and Start Feeling Better"

We have been seeing a number of construction workers in our clinic who have complained of elbow pain. As a result, they have difficulty holding on to the hammer and working with it, or using any kind of power tools with vibration. If this sounds like what you are going through, it’s most likely a medical condition called lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow. This condition can be challenging to manage without professional treatment, particularly because it's difficult for individuals to take breaks from their job-related activities.

We know it’s not just about the pain (we know you can take a lot of pain). It’s actually about your livelihood. If you’re suffering from this condition to the point that you have to stop multiple times to shake it off, or you start to notice how often you’re dropping objects from your hands, give us a call.

Let us help you get back to work.

"From Sea Turtles to PT Tables: We’re back!"

You may have noticed that we’ve taken a hiatus from posting. That’s because I, the owner of Your Neighbor Physical Therapy and the author of all these posts, was out of the country for almost a month. I suppose I could’ve written more while overseas since I always had internet access, but sometimes taking a break from our busy lives is necessary. It gives us a chance to relax, reflect, and re-engage so we can come back even better at what we do.

Speaking of re-engaging, I have some VERY exciting news to share in the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned!

For now, enjoy a couple of pictures of my daughter and I snorkeling. We saw plenty of green sea turtles. They’re a protected species in Taiwan, and just touching one could result in a fine of up to $10,000. That could be a down payment on a total hip replacement, or a lot of physical therapy sessions, which might actually help you avoid surgery in the first place. So keep that in mind!

"The One Time We’ll Tell You to Go Somewhere Else"

We are proud to provide high-quality orthopedic physical therapy to those in need, and we welcome all patients. However, there is one situation where it may be better NOT to come to us: if you need physical therapy after joint surgery (such as a knee replacement, rotator cuff repair, etc.).

The reason is that after surgery, your health insurance deductible is usually met, meaning your post-operative physical therapy will likely be covered with little or no out-of-pocket cost, especially if you choose a provider in your insurance network. If you're concerned about the quality of care, most post-surgical rehabilitation follows standardized protocols that most physical therapists are trained to implement effectively.

We share this with you because our priority is always your best interest. We take pride in delivering exceptional, personalized care, and that includes being honest about when another option might make more sense for your situation.
