“Autistic children, adolescents, and young adults are struggling to access behavioral health care in Ohio.” — Marla Root, June 5 testimony

Last week, Marla Root addressed the Ohio Senate Finance Committee with a clear message: the provider networks meant to serve Ohio’s autistic population—on both Medicaid and commercial plans—are failing under outdated limits and inaccessible coverage.

The solution? Five state budget amendments to stabilize autism care across the board—with no fiscal impact to the state. These include:

✅ Removing harmful age, hour, and visit caps in commercial plans
✅ Reimbursing ABA therapy at fair, actuarially set Medicaid rates
✅ Launching the long-awaited Medicaid coverage by July 1
✅ Protecting providers from rate cuts
✅ Giving technicians 120 days to achieve certification

These are common sense changes. They uphold the federal Mental Health Parity Law, reflect medical necessity, and restore hope to families like Jenny’s and Chad’s—both shared in Marla’s testimony.

Hi! 👋🏼 I’m Kim Rose, the founder of Spectrum Swim Fund! I’m so excited to announce the upcoming launch of our scholarship fund, which aims to provide no cost swimming lessons for autistic children in the Dayton, Ohio area.
Learning to swim isn’t just a recreational activity, it is a lifesaving skill. For autistic children, it is even more vital, as drowning is the leading cause of accidental death among autistic children.
We’ve been seeing increasing cases of these devastating tragedies lately, as autistic children are both prone to wander and frequently drawn to water. Being the mother of an autistic child myself, I couldn’t bear the thought of something like this happening to one more child, and I needed to do something to help. And there truly is no better safety net for an unattended autistic child, who finds themselves in or near water, than having the ability to swim.
We already have an amazing partnership set up with a local swim school (more on that to come) and will soon begin kicking off our first fundraising efforts!
