Dr. John Chen, who is speaking at this year’s Pacific Symposium hosted by Pacific College, is on the research team that helped University of South Florida receive a 1.8 MILLION dollar grant to study Chinese herbs for diabetes! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) is the primary federal agency responsible for scientific research on integrative health approaches. Its mission is to enhance health and healthcare through thorough scientific investigation.

Traditionally, Shan Zhu Yu (Fructus Corni), commonly known as Asiatic Dogwood, is classified as an astringent herb that also has significant effect to nourish Liver and Kidney yin to treat various disorders characterized by weakness, atrophy, debility, deterioration and loss of body fluids. More recently, it has been explored to treat diabetes and the associated complications.

This is BIG news for the integrative medicine community, and hopefully the beginning of many more studies like this!

Attention Portland locals! DOPE IS DEATH
Sunday, May 12, 2024 at 2:00 PM
Hollywood Theatre, Main Auditorium
(Wheelchair Accessible)
Cost: $9.00 per person

In 1973, Dr. Mutulu Shakur, along with fellow Black Panthers and the Young Lords, combined community health with radical politics to create the first acupuncture detoxification program in America. DOPE IS DEATH explores how this form of radical harm reduction was a revolutionary act toward the government programs that transfixed the lives of black and brown communities throughout the South Bronx. There is much to learn from these accomplishments: lessons which promise to inspire generations of activists, ecologists, and all of those who are determined to serve their communities.

A community conversation with director Mia Donovan with special guests from the film follows the screening.

Our Portland area premiere of the inspiring feature-length documentary is sponsored by The AfroVillage PDX.

About the Event Sponsor: The AfroVillage PDX fosters equity, dignity, and sustainability in Portland’s Black and Brown communities, with a focus on women, immigrants, and people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity.

With over 75% of autoimmune diseases presenting in women, we have to look at the role a life time of suppressing and pleasing does to our bodies.

From a young age many women are taught to seen and not heard. To keep secrets. To produce and achieve. To carry shame that was never their own. And most of the time they’re taught to do it alone— without any adults to help them through the issue. To validate it. Or to say: “that wasn’t ok.”

Add this to the cultural push to forgive (which often creates even deeper repression) the good girl has no outlet for her anger. Instead she smiles, says it’s ok when it isn’t, and stays quiet. Going through life in survival mode, her body remembers. And one day she presents with an autoimmune disease, a functional freeze state, or a mystery illness.

Often, she’s told it’s just in her head. That her test results came back normal. That she probably “just has anxiety or depression”— but her body remembers.

And it’s loudly speaking: NO. And enough
