✨️As licensed healthcare professionals—nurses, nurse practitioners, and colleagues—we carry immense responsibility for patient safety, advocacy, and outcomes. Yet right now, our profession is facing a troubling barrier to advancement: a decades-old regulatory definition stemming from the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA) is being used to exclude nursing—and advanced nursing degrees—from “professional degree” status, thereby restricting access to the loans and financial-aid pathways intended for professions like medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and law.
✨️Here’s what’s at stake:
• Because nursing and advanced nursing practice degrees are being categorized under graduate degrees, rather than professional degrees, the federal rules limit our ability to borrow and invest in the preparation needed to serve at the highest levels.
• This distinction is not just academic—when you’ve committed years to training, licensure, advanced practice, and leadership, you deserve recognition and the same access to resources as other licensed professionals.
• In a time of nursing shortage and healthcare transformation, restricting access to education funding for advanced practice nurses undermines patient care, health-system capacity, and our ability to lead innovation.
✨️Let's support the campaign led by the American Nurses Association (ANA) calling on policymakers to amend or clarify the federal definition of “professional degree” so that nursing—and its advanced practice tracks—are included.
✨️Our colleagues at the Florida Association of Nurse Practitioners - FLANP will continue fighting against this action. You can join us:

✨️Why this matters to you:
• When advanced practice nurses have full access to financial support—just like other professionals—healthcare becomes stronger, more equitable, and better prepared for the future.
• Supporting this effort means investing in safe, high-quality care for our communities, in expanded access to prevention and wellness, and in the future of the nursing workforce.
✨️If you’re a nurse, NP, educator, student, or allied healthcare professional: please join me in saying “our profession counts, our advanced degrees matter, and we deserve the same recognition and access”.
