✨ Transitions Are Hard — And It’s Not Because Your Child Is “Difficult” ✨
One of the biggest breakthroughs in a recent parent coaching session was this reframe:
👉 Transitions aren’t just moving from one activity to another.
For many kids, they feel like a full nervous-system reset — and that’s exhausting.
When children are already tired, overstimulated, or dysregulated, even “small” transitions (turning off the TV, putting on shoes, leaving the house) can feel overwhelming.
💛 The goal isn’t perfect transitions.
The goal is to make transitions feel safe, predictable, and guided.
Here are some parent-approved transition tools we shared that made a real difference:
🕒 Transition Preview (Visual Time Cues)
Use colors instead of words:
🔵 Almost time → 🟡 2 minutes → 🔴 Time to change
(Visuals cue the brain before language does.)
🎵 Personalized Transition Songs
Silly, repetitive songs for daily routines (shoes, car, cleanup).
Rhythm becomes the cue — not reminders or negotiations.
🧸 Transition Buddy
A small object or stuffed animal that “travels” with your child from one space to the next, helping their body carry comfort through change.
🧾 Visual Transition Strips
Simple picture sequences (morning → school → home → bedtime).
Checking them off builds predictability and reduces anxiety.
🧘 Movement Bridges
Jump, push, spin, crawl — move first, then transition.
The body helps the brain shift gears faster than words ever will.
✨ Connection Rituals
A secret handshake, squeeze token, or silly phrase just for you and your child — especially for hard goodbyes or bedtime.
And one of the most important reminders for parents:
🧠 Regulate yourself first.
A calm breath, one instruction at a time, and fewer words can make transitions feel safer for everyone involved.
💬 If transitions are a daily struggle in your home, you’re not alone — and you’re not doing anything wrong. With the right tools, they can get easier.
