Holiday visits often reveal changes that raise real concerns. If you live far away, the person who steps into your parent’s home becomes your eyes and ears. That is why professional oversight matters. Licensed caregivers are trained to recognize early warning signs, prevent avoidable risks, and communicate what family members cannot see from a distance.

If your visit showed that it might be time for more support, make sure the care you choose is safe, trained, and accountable.

When you only see your loved ones a few times a year, the holidays can quietly reveal changes that are easy to miss during phone calls or quick check-ins. Maybe routines seemed harder for them this visit, or small tasks took more energy than before. Moments like these are worth paying attention to, because they help you understand what daily life is really looking like for your parent.

This is where gentle questions make a real difference.
“What has been feeling harder lately”
“Would it help to have someone check in or assist with a few tasks”

These questions are not about pointing out problems. They are about opening a conversation that gives your loved one space to express what they might be managing on their own. Curiosity, patience, and compassion help you understand whether this is normal aging or a sign they could benefit from additional support.

If your visit raised new concerns, consider this a natural moment to explore what consistent help at home could look like. Professional caregivers can bridge the gap between what your parent can safely manage and what has quietly become too much.

The goal is simple: help them stay independent, supported, and confident in their own home.

Is this normal aging?
Do they need more support at home?

Our new carousel breaks down 10 clear signs to pay attention to and why they matter. If any of them sound familiar, Onyx Home Care can help you navigate what to do next with clarity and compassion.

Our Story

Colleen and Michael McGrew purchased The Wallis Agency in 2015 and renamed the business Onyx Home Care in 2016. Colleen, a registered nurse, is continuing the legacy of RN ownership that began with Mary Wallis in 1967. The company has been owned and operated locally by a Registered Nurse for almost 50 years.

After careful consideration, Colleen felt a name change would better reflect the new spirit of the business. Onyx Home Care was chosen based off the use of the onyx stone in ancient healing practices. The onyx stone was meant to aid in the balance of body, mind and spirit. This reflects Colleen’s heart for Onyx Home Care, to see the quality of life, health and independence of each patient improve exponentially. The Onyx Home Care team provides care to patients in a nurturing and trusting environment in Central Florida.

Colleen is a third generation RN owner and is bringing a renewed sense of accountability to home health care. She has a bachelors of science in nursing from Western Connecticut State University. Working as an RN for over 26 years has given her many roles such as: staff, charge, emergency room, and telephone triage nurse. Colleen’s experience in patient care has given her a unique perspective on the needs of patients and their family members. She brings this knowledge into her knew position as owner of Onyx Home Care.

The McGrews love Daytona Beach. Colleen hosts a women’s group once a week that has nearly outgrown their meeting space and Michael has been a part of numerous local activities through his previous position as a plant manager. Colleen and Michael are continually looking for ways to serve their area. Onyx Home Care is a way for The McGrews to use their professional experiences to help their community.
