International Overdose Day

August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day.
The CDC estimates that 80,000 people in the U.S. lost their lives to drug overdoses last year. Overdose can affect anyone, and awareness saves lives.
Know the signs to spot an overdose: -Slow or no breathing
-Unconsciousness
-Pale, cold, or blue skin/lips
-Gurgling or choking sounds
If you see these signs: -Call 911 immediately
-Administer naloxone (Narcan) if available
-Stay with the person until help arrives

We're coming together to reduce stigma, raise awareness, and support those affected. 💜

Pharmacy Fun Fact

Did you know? 🤔 The red “Rx” symbol comes from the Latin word recipe, which means “take this.” 💊 Back in medieval times, doctors would write “Rx” at the start of prescriptions to tell pharmacists what ingredients to “take” and prepare. Some also believe the symbol traces back to Jupiter’s symbol (♃), thought to bring good health and protection. In othe words: It's a small symbol with a big history! 🩺

Medication Safety

Medication Safety 101: Here’s What NOT to Mix 💊 Certain foods and drinks can alter how your medications work or cause unwanted side effects. Grapefruit, alcohol, vitamin K-rich foods, and more can interact with common meds like statins, blood thinners, and antibiotics. Always check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing meds with anything new. Your safety should always come first.

Pharmacy Trivia Tuesday

How well do you know common kids’ medications? 💊 Acetaminophen is a go-to for pain and fever relief when dosed correctly. Ibuprofen is another safe option, often used for similar symptoms. Diphenhydramine helps with allergies and sometimes sleep, but should be used cautiously in little ones. Aspirin, however, isn’t recommended for children under 12 because it can cause a rare but serious condition called Reye’s syndrome. Did you guess correctly? ✅ The answer is Aspirin. As always, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before giving any medication to children.

Pharmacy Myth Busters

July is UV Safety Awareness Month, so let’s address a common myth. Think you’re safe from sunburn in the shade? Not quite… 🚫 Myth: You can’t get a sunburn in the shade. ✅ Truth: UV rays can reflect off water, sand, pavement, and even grass. Shade helps, but it doesn’t block all exposure. To keep yourself safe from harmful rays, follow proper sun safety: wear SPF 30+, use hats and sunglasses, stay hydrated, and reapply sunscreen every two hours. Even in the shade, your skin still needs backup. ☀️
