🌿 Wellness Wednesday at Full Circle 🌿
Today, we want to share something close to our hearts—Jamie’s personal journey with POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) and Dysautonomia, and how it inspired the creation of our POTS & Dysautonomia Management Program.
“When my oldest daughter was a senior in high school, she started randomly passing out. These episodes then became more and more frequent along with some other "weird" symptoms. Fortunately/unfortunately, she was given a POTS diagnosis quite quickly. As a full-fledged "mama bear", I dove right into all the research - trying all the different suggestions out there. We have been to numerous facilities in and out of state - all with the same outcome: “try this and hopefully you'll outgrow it”. I never really felt I had great local support - instead relying heavily my personal research and on online groups. I was very passionate about advocating for my daughter and others who suffered as well. I wanted to be that resource and support system I didn't have.
Early on with COVID, I was furloughed from my job so my daughter became my "science experiment". We had already been working with her diet and had a port placed for extra fluids that she gave herself daily. She did 2L of saline every day for 4 years! I instructed her in and progressed specific exercises to help improve her strength and endurance. That summer, she babysat my 2 nieces and was able to keep up with them all day long, "running" in her wheelchair (using her legs to propel her) while playing kickball with them and then going for "walks", building blanket forts on rainy days and making sidewalk chalk hop scotch outlines on the driveway. As long as she stayed consistent with her exercise program, her flares were minimal. We then discovered that pool exercises/water walking was a fantastic addition! She could stand and walk in the water without having ANY issues! So we began going to the pool twice a week to work on reconditioning her body. We teased her that she became a mermaid, lol.
Fast forward a few months (because let’s be real, this is an ongoing process), she began to feel “normal”. After 7 years in the wheelchair, she was able to start transitioning out of the wheelchair without an increase in symptoms. After just a few months, she ditched it completely and never went back. She is able to work full-time. She was even swept off her feet with a cliffside proposal (much to this mama's chagrin!) and is getting married this October. She has been my motivation to keep pushing and helping others.
I have been running a POTS and Dysautonomia Management Program for about 4 years, most recently finding a new home within Full Circle Therapy and Wellness.
One thing I want to make perfectly clear: you WILL be heard, you are NOT alone!
We understand there is no cure for POTS and we recognize the limited support out there. This is why I originally named it a “management program” - we are incorporating treatment strategies to help improve the overall quality of life for those affected. Our program is continually changing - adding and adapting different concepts. We utilize many tools: exercise, manual therapy, strain counterstain, education, taping, visceral manipulation, craniosacral therapy and cupping to name a few.
We also discuss the following pillars: hydration, nutrition, sleep, movement/exercise and lifestyle. The goal of our program is to provide support, education, and resources as well as research based treatment for all patients with dysautonomia and its related conditions. I have also personally created a binder/booklet to share with clients which is filled with tips and tricks to help improve daily life! We are here to help!”
If you or someone you love is navigating POTS or Dysautonomia, know that you’re not alone. There’s a community—and a plan—here to support you. 🩵
