Helping Huskies Thrive’s Mission
Helping Huskies Thrive – Su***de Awareness and Prevention Program is a collaborative effort between Northern Illinois University’s Department of Counseling, Adult and Higher Education (CAHE) and Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS). In 2016, the program was awarded the Garrett Lee Smith Campus Su***de Prevention Grant through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA).
With this support, our mission is to address barriers to accessing mental health services on campus. This includes providing education and outreach for our community as well as learning how we can best meet these needs. If we can facilitate NIU’s efforts to make our community a safe and supportive place for all students, these efforts will have been well worth it. It is our hope that this page can serve as a place to provide education on when and how to seek help for ourselves and our friends.
Additionally, it is very important to be able to speak openly and honestly about mental health so we encourage discussion on this page about articles and topics. In this way, everyone’s voice can be heard and we can all work together to prevent su***de and reach out to those who need our help.
