Are you on a low carb journey? Cutting out sugar in your daily meals & snacks? If so, you’ve more than likely came across or consumed something with erythritol.
It’s now in many prepackaged Keto foods, and typically snuck into packaged Monk Fruit sweeteners. If you’re like many, erythritol can be an unwanted surprise in foods due to the uncomfortable side effects of this sugar alcohol. 😩
Some of the most common erythritol side effects are undesirable gastrointestinal side effects that children are especially susceptible to.
Diarrhea and gas is a well-known common erythritol side effect.
Especially when consumed in excess, unabsorbed erythritol can attract water from the intestinal wall and cause diarrhea.
Sugar alcohols pass through your body essentially untouched, much like dietary fiber does. This is why they can produce abdominal gas, bloating and diarrhea in some individuals — as they are not completely absorbed by the body and are fermented by bacteria in the large intestine.
Most of the erythritol used in foods & beverages today is derived from cornstarch from genetically modified corn.
Animal studies have linked consumption of GMOs with the following potential problems:
•infertility
•immune problems
•accelerated aging
•faulty insulin regulation
•changes in major organs & gastrointestinal system
For some, consuming sugar alcohols can leave them feeling even hungrier than before consuming food containing erythritol, xylitol etc. Because it is not digested by the body, sugar alcohols may trick your brain into thinking you are still hungry.
For some, consuming erythritol is just fine. But we recommend using dates, coconut sugar, organic maple syrup or bananas to sweeten up your almond milk, coffee , smoothies, desserts etc. Moderation is key. Our bodies can recognize these, digest them easier and your gut will thank you for it ❤️
