Every year, December 1st is recognized as World Aids Day.

Here at The Up Center, we will use today to serve ending HIV-related stigma, honor those we have lost, and commit to working toward a day when HIV is no longer a public health threat.

Living with a chronic disease can have a significant effect on our mental health, however when we are also suffering from negative stigmas it may worsen.

Today, we want to encourage everyone to continue to educate themselves on the virus and provide support to those who may be affected.

Seasonal Affective Disorder, more commonly known as Seasonal Depression or the “winter blues” is a subtype of depression that begins and ends around the same time every year. This is typically when the seasons begin to change, however is most prevalent in the fall/ winter months beginning in late October.

Symptoms may include low energy or fatigue, loss of interest in activities you usually enjoy, changes in appetite, or sleeping too much. In a given year, about 5% of the U.S. population experiences seasonal depression (NIH).

It is most common in women between 20- 30 years old but can affect anyone or at an earlier age. The biggest thing we can do to combat this is taking care of ourselves! Here are a few tips on maintaining your wellness in the colder months:

💃🏽Prioritize social activities & get moving!

Socialization can ease the feeling of isolation that comes with being stuck inside during the winter months and may improve feelings of anxiety.

🪟Let the light in!

Keep your blinds open during the day, bundle up and head outside as much as you can.

🧴Aromatherapy!

The use of essential oils can calm mood swings and alleviate trouble with sleeping.

📆Create and stick with a schedule!

With the sun setting much earlier, creating and sticking to a schedule can help maintain your circadian rhythm.

☀️Vitamin D!

Usually obtained from sunshine, consider adding supplements to your diet when the days begin to get shorter.
