โ๏ธ Outlaw Equine Biosecurity Notice โ EHV-1 Outbreak Operations Update
Due to the recent Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) outbreak, Outlaw Equine is operating as two completely separate and independent facilities to maintain the highest level of biosecurity and ensure patient safety.
๐ฅ Facility Separation
Main Hospital โ Closed Herd
The main hospital is functioning as a closed herd, including:
โข Outlaw Stallion Station & Reproduction Center/ Mare Barn/ Stallion Barn/ Collection Center
โข Rehabilitation Center: swimming pool, water walker, walker, cold saltwater chamber, and all other rehab modalities in use for in-house patients (not currently accepting haul in patients)
โข Main Clinic Hospital & ICU for non-EHV emergencies such as; colic, trauma, lacerations, and other medical emergencies
๐ท Isolation Facility โ Across the Street
A fully separate facility for:
โข Suspect-positive, exposed, or incoming horses from all over Texas
โข Independent staff, barn crew, feed crew, and equipment
โข Strict PPE, cleaning, disinfection, and temperature-monitoring protocols
โข No commingling with main hospital horses or personnel is permitted
This dual-facility system allows Outlaw Equine to continue care when many equine hospitals are unable to accept EHV-suspect cases.
๐ฆ Stall Sanitation Protocol
Each stall in the isolation facility is cleaned using:
โข High-temperature steam cleaning at over 200ยฐF
โข Complete pressure washing of all surfaces
โข Veterinary-grade disinfectants
โข Documented drying time prior to next patient
This restores each stall to a biosecure state and minimizes environmental infectious load.
๐ฉบ Diagnostic Protocols for Incoming Horses
All horses entering isolation receive:
Testing:
โข Rapid stall-side EHV test (approx. 1 hour in house testing)
โข Off site lab tested PCR (nasal swab & blood) to TVMDL or IDEXX
โข Coordination with TAHC
Medical Intake:
โข Full physical exam & neurological evaluation
โข Baseline blood work and diagnostics (patient specific)
Recommended Testing Window:
โข 2โ4 days post-exposure, or 2โ5 days if timing is uncertain
โข Immediate testing if clinical signs are present
๐ Treatment Protocols
Exposed, asymptomatic horses with negative tests:
โข Lysine, Ultimate Oil, Vitamin E & Selenium, probiotics
โข Strict temperature monitoring (logged twice daily)
Horses with clinical signs or positive tests:
โข Antivirals: Acyclovir or Valacyclovir
โข Supportive care: Lysine, Ultimate Oil, Vitamin E & Selenium, electrolytes, IV fluids
โข Monitoring & nursing: bladder/re**al care, neurological checks, IV catheters
โข NSAIDs & subcutaneous heparin for severe cases
๐ Off-Site & At-Home Options
โข On-farm testing: nasal swabs, physical exams, temperature monitoring
โข At-home treatment: guided by veterinarian with medications and follow-up instructions
โข Optional off-label ivermectin therapy: under veterinary supervision/ recommendation only
๐ Client Requirements & Biosecurity Expectations
โข Call ahead, even for emergencies
โข Temperature checks upon arrival
โข Risk-based rapid testing prior upon entry
โข Main hospital remains closed herd; routine work limited unless medically necessary
โข Isolation facility operates for suspect, positive, or symptomatic horses, as well as quarantined emergencies
