What is the Alexander Technique? The Alexander Technique is a method that works to change movement habits in our everyday activities. It is a simple and practical method for improving ease and freedom of movement, balance, support and coordination. The technique teaches the use of the appropriate amount of effort for a particular activity, giving you more energy for all your activities. It is not a series of treatments or exercises, but rather a re-education of the mind and body. What can it do for me as an actor? Many actors already know the benefit of using Alexander Technique to stay grounded and deliver lines with conviction and clarity. Alexander Technique is also used in examining your own approach to using your body (as well as your mind) in acting. Got a physically demanding role? Using AT will help you change your stature healthily to suit the part. As a psycho-physical educational method, Alexander Technique helps you to be more embodied on stage and off. Alexander Classes are a great way to introduce yourself to the Technique and to learn more about your own use in just a few short weeks. When does the next Insight Actors Studio Alexander Technique class series start? We begin on Monday, March 20, 2017. Classes meet at Insight Actors Studio, 1164 N. Highland Ave. NE Atlanta, GA 30306. Classes will be held on Mondays from 11:30am - 1:00 pm. Is it just for actors? This class is also open to anyone, and will be particularly applicable for those who are interested in acting or performing. When do I sign up? Registration is now open for class beginning March 20, 2017. Cost per class series: $200 for 8 weeks. (Payment can be made in two installments.)

Easy, relaxed, breathing always leads to surprise: at how centered we already are, how unhurried we are beneath it all, how patient we never knew we could be.

Alexander Teachers have been showing people how to do this comfortably for years! (And yes, there’s lots of mention of AT in the comments, if not in the article)

We are so afraid of wasting time that we are reluctant to take the time---time we desperately need if we are to nurture our inner lives and connect with who we are and what we know, deep down.

Living in the moment is learning how to live between the big moments. It is learning how to make the most of the in-betweens and having the audacity to make those moments just as exciting.

It's the time of year where I do some blog posts! I'll be posting a few of them here over the next few days, on the theme of Resistance. Here's a link to the introductory post!

“Come, child, come…” whispered the wind through the branches. I look up to see a path beckoning me. Not yet, I say to myself.

They can speak, trees, they can say the sweetest
things, and can even tell a joke,
But it takes special ears to hear them,
ears that have listened to people...
With great care.

Mystery is what happens to us when we allow life to evolve rather than having to make it happen all the time. It is the strange knock at the door, the sudden sight of an unceremoniously blooming flower, an afternoon in the yard, a day of riding the midtown bus. Just to see. Just to notice. Just to be there.

I cannot tell you
how the light comes.

What I know
is that it is more ancient
than imagining.

That it travels
across an astounding expanse
to reach us.

That it loves
searching out
what is hidden
what is lost
what is forgotten
or in peril
or in pain.

That it has a fondness
for the body
for finding its way
toward flesh
for tracing the edges
of form
for shining forth
through the eye,
the hand,
the heart.

I cannot tell you
how the light comes,
but that it does.
That it will.
That it works its way
into the deepest dark
that enfolds you,
though it may seem
long ages in coming
or arrive in a shape
you did not foresee.

And so
may we this day
turn ourselves toward it.
May we lift our faces
to let it find us.
May we bend our bodies
to follow the arc it makes.
May we open
and open more
and open still

to the blessed light
that comes.

Robbin Marcus offers Alexander Technique lessons and classes for actors and others in the Annex Studio at Decatur Healing Arts. Please email or call for more information: robbin@robbinmarcusmusic.com or 678-720-8717 . I have a flexible appointment schedule, but I am generally in Decatur on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am- 6pm. Evening slots available on Thursdays. FAQs: What is the Alexander Technique? The Alexander Technique is a method that works to change movement habits in our everyday activities. It is a simple and practical method for improving ease and freedom of movement, balance, support and coordination. The technique teaches the use of the appropriate amount of effort for a particular activity, giving you more energy for all your activities. It is not a series of treatments or exercises, but rather a re-education of the mind and body.

How is Alexander Technique taught? Alexander Technique is generally taught in private lessons, which range from an hour at the start of taking lessons, to a half hour for established students. The best success rate comes from taking private lessons; the recommended approach is to take 8 weeks of lessons, one weekly, and then the student and teacher evaluate where we go next.

As a graduate of the AlexanderAlliance, in the tradition of Marjorie Barstow, I also enjoy teaching classes about the Alexander Technique. I am a believer in working with people in the activities they enjoy most, or in the areas they most want help in finding greater ease and comfort. In addition, I often work with people using classical Alexander Technique activities such as standing and sitting, and working on a table.

I’m an actor, and I’ve heard about AT. What can it do for me? Many actors already know the benefit of using Alexander Technique to stay grounded and deliver lines with conviction and clarity. Alexander Technique is also used in examining your own approach to using your body (as well as your mind) in acting. Got a physically demanding role? Using AT will help you change your stature healthily to suit the part. As a psycho-physical educational method, Alexander Technique helps you to be more embodied on stage and off. Alexander Classes are an affordable way to introduce yourself to the Technique and to learn more about your own use in just a few short weeks. Who takes your classes? My classes are open to anyone. I work with a lot of performers, but I also work with seniors, those in recovery from injury who are finishing PT and want to learn to trust their bodies again, and people who work at computers all day. Often a class is filled with people from many different walks of life, and it’s informative and eye-opening to watch the technique in action differently with each person in the class. Classes are generally light-hearted adventures into living an embodied life, and upping your Awareness Game in daily living.
