Chelsea Bell, APRN, recently joined Prairie Cardiovascular in O’Fallon, located at Three St. Elizabeth’s Blvd., Suite 1800.

“I look forward to working with my patients by establishing a trusting relationship as we work together to improve their cardiovascular and overall health, says Chelsea. “I listen closely to my patient's concerns and involve them in the process of formulating a plan to improve quality of life. My focus is to also prioritize patient education so that patients feel knowledgeable about their health and are comfortable with our plan of care. I also to concentrate on prevention of disease when able.”

In her free time, Chelsea enjoys spending time with family playing cards and board games. She enjoys being outdoors, traveling and crafting. She and her husband are avid sports fans.

In 2015, Dr. Hanna-Attisha’s advocacy efforts drew national attention when she released research demonstrating increased lead exposure in children in Flint, Michigan after the city’s water source was changed. Today, she continues to work to address poverty as a root cause of health disparities for children in Flint.

Born and raised in Beirut, Dr. Zoghbi is a Lebanese-born American geneticist, professor and editor of the Annual Review of Neuroscience. Her work helped explain the genes and genetic mechanisms responsible for a number of devastating neurological disorders, such as Rett syndrome, and has opened new ways of thinking about others, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s.

Dr. Zerhouni is an Algerian-born American scientist, radiologist and biomedical engineer with over 200 peer reviewed publications and eight patents. Partly based on his research of CAT scan and MRI technology and subsequent inventions, Dr. Zerhouni founded or co-founded five start-up companies. In addition to his research and business interests, he served as director of the National Institutes of Health from 2002-2008.

Vascular Surgeons Dr. Christopher Gram and Dr. Jeffrey Trachtenberg are now seeing patients in Effingham at Prairie Heart Institute on the campus of HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, located at 503 N. Maple St.

Dr. Gram earned his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He completed his residency at Berkshire Medical Center and a fellowship in vascular surgery at Boston Medical Center. He is board-certified in vascular surgery.

Dr. Trachtenberg earned his medical degree from SUNY – Brooklyn Health Science Center and is board-certified in vascular surgery. He completed his residency at Barnes Jewish College of Nursing. He completed a fellowship in vascular medicine at Barnes Jewish College of Nursing and a fellowship in vascular surgery at University of Washington College of Medicine.

During Arab American Heritage Month, we are highlighting medical pioneers like Dr. DeBakey. At age 23, while still in medical school, he developed the roller pump, which 20 years later became an essential component of the heart-lung machine. The pump provided a continuous flow of blood during operations. This, in turn, made open-heart surgery possible.

Vascular Surgeon Dr. Yiefi Sun is now seeing patients in Hillsboro at Prairie Cardiovascular’s outreach office, located at 1203 E. Tremont St.

Dr. Sun earned his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at St. Louis University School of Medicine and a vascular surgery fellowship at University of Minnesota Medical School. He is board-certified in vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

Experts at NASA say that staring directly at a partially eclipsed sun without specialized eye protection can cause severe damage to the eyes. Dr. Whitney Marlow, an ophthalmologist performing eye surgeries at HSHS ministries in southern Illinois, agrees.

“This experience is going to be spectacular, but we want to make sure we are taking safety seriously,” Marlow said. “If you are going to be watching the eclipse, you need to wear approved solar glasses. No question about it.” Dr. Marlow also added that staring at the sun anytime, not just shortly before or after the eclipse, can lead to permanent damage, including blurry vision, a blind spot, increased sensitivity to light and other symptoms.
