LONG post alert, BUT it encompasses a significant topic: READING!
Now that we have talked about play and its competitor- screen time. Today we will discuss another very important activity to support your child’s speech-language, cognitive, and social-emotional development. READING!! Spending time each day reading with your child from birth will not be time wasted.
Some questions we often get about reading:
“What if my child does not want to sit and listen?”
Solutions: Don’t feel the need to read every word on the page. Read even if they aren’t sitting. Many children need movement and are still listening or learning.
“What if my child just flips the pages?”
Solutions: Use interactive books, such as lift the flap, drive the car, stickers, touch and feel. Try to point out 1 thing on each page and just say a single word or short phrase.
“What if my child interrupts me while I am reading?”
Solutions: Allow it! Book reading is a shared time that is just as much about connection with your child as it is the actual book. This offers an opportunity for you to have a conversation with your child. Build off of what they say or ask about before you continue reading.
“What if my child already knows how to read?”
Solutions: Continue reading to them! Listening to another person read aloud can be very engaging and allow for deeper conversations. You can read higher-level texts than your child can read on their own, so they will learn new vocabulary and more advanced sentence structures. This will continue to be a shared activity that promotes connection between you and your child.
“What if my child is struggling with reading and writing?”
SLP’s can help! We often work with children at all stages of literacy development, because reading and writing is that of sounds and words! We can help your child learn the names of letters and the sounds they make, rhyming, segmenting, and blending; we can help your child learn the ‘rules’ of reading and writing; we can teach your child reading comprehension strategies; and we can help your child with organization and generalization of written texts. If you are questioning literacy difficulties, we can be a valuable team member for your child!
