The new melatonin study that’s trending right now is being twisted for clicks and the truth is much more nuanced.
Here’s what the research actually showed: It was an observational study in older adults diagnosed with insomnia who were given melatonin. Those people showed a higher association with heart failure over several years, but the study does not prove that melatonin causes it.
It also didn’t say whether their insomnia improved (which is important, because chronic insomnia itself increases heart failure risk).
Observational studies are used to find patterns, not to make final conclusions. The authors themselves said more research is needed before drawing cause-and-effect claims.
Melatonin has a long track record of safety in low doses and short-term use, especially for occasional sleep support. Most previous studies show it’s well-tolerated, particularly compared to other sleep medications.
👉 The real takeaway: Don’t let fear-driven headlines make your health decisions. Always read beyond the headline, use supplements wisely, and talk with a trusted healthcare professional if you use melatonin nightly or long-term.
