Recent news has created unnecessary confusion for parents about vaccine schedules, but pediatricians are here to help provide some clarity:

1. Giving vaccines on the recommended schedule enables children’s immune systems to protect them from preventable diseases.

2. Children’s immune systems are remarkable and are able to develop protection from multiple vaccines at one time.

Hear more from Dr. Ari Brown on the dangers of skipping or delaying childhood vaccines in Washington Post’s piece:

BACK TO SCHOOL WEEK 📚✏️🍎

The Sunshine Pediatrics team is here to help you embrace the back to school transition. Going from laid-back summer days to the rigid routine of school can be a challenging transition. Below are some resources created to help with the back-to-school bumps so you and your child can fully embrace the excitement that comes with a new start! 🏫

🩺 Well-child examinations are a cornerstone of healthcare for children of all ages. These check-ups are essential for monitoring your child's growth and development, catching potential health issues early, and ensuring they are physically and mentally prepared for school.

💉 Vaccinations play a critical role in protecting children from various infectious diseases. Illnesses can quickly spread, so ensuring your child is current on vaccinations is vital.

🥦 Nutrition is key. A balanced diet is fundamental to a child's physical and cognitive development. Proper nutrition helps children maintain energy levels, concentrate better in school and support overall growth and development. Children require different amounts of nutrients based on their age.

😴 Sleep is vital. Adequate sleep is crucial for a child's overall well-being, affecting everything from their mood to their ability to learn and retain information. Children who do not get enough sleep are more likely to experience attention problems, behavioral issues and poor academic performance.

🚸 Bullying is a serious issue that can significantly affect a child's mental and emotional health. It occurs far too often nationwide in elementary, junior high and high schools. Parents and guardians must take bullying seriously and teach your children a few tactics to address bullies productively.

📆 Creating a positive start to the school year
Preparing for the new school year involves more than buying school supplies and updating the calendar with activities. It's also about prioritizing your child's health and well-being to ensure their success and happiness.

⭐️ By scheduling well-child examinations, keeping vaccinations up to date, providing balanced nutrition, ensuring adequate sleep, addressing bullying and modeling these healthy habits yourself, you can help your child have a healthy, productive and successful school year.

☎️ Please contact us to schedule your child’s well check, vaccine visits, sport’s physicals, with any questions/concerns, and/or required paperwork for the upcoming school year!

😎 JULY IS UV AWARENESS MONTH 😎

In July, we raise awareness that UV is the root cause of most skin cancers and encourage the public to take precautions. Summer vacation is coming to an end, but the southern, summer weather remains in Alabama! To keep your child safe outdoors, dermatologists recommend:

⛱️ Keep your baby in the SHADE. Shade is the best way to shield your baby from the sun, especially if younger than six months old. Keep your baby in the shade as much as possible, and if you can’t find shade, create your own using an umbrella, canopy or the hood of a stroller.

👒 Dress your baby in SUN-PROTECTIVE CLOTHING, such as a lightweight, long-sleeved shirt and pants. In addition, make sure your baby always wears a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection.

🧴 Minimize SUNSCREEN use on children younger than six months old. However, if shade and adequate clothing are not available, parents and caretakers may apply a minimal amount of broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to their children’s skin. Sunscreens containing titanium dioxide or zinc oxide are less likely to irritate a baby’s sensitive skin. Remember to reapply your child’s sunscreen every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating, as there is no such thing as “waterproof” sunscreen.

🥵 STAY SAFE on hot days. In addition to sun protection, stay safe on hot days by making sure your baby does not get overheated and drinks plenty of fluids. If your baby is fussy, crying excessively or has redness on any exposed skin, take him or her indoors immediately.

Sun protection 🕶️ is important at EVERY stage of life, including infancy! ALWAYS protect yourself and your family from the sun! ☀️
