Yesterday, we were proud to celebrate two of our own at the Massachusetts Coalition for Su***de Prevention (MCSP) Leadership in Su***de Prevention Awards at the Massachusetts State House.

Congratulations to Larry Berkowitz and Jim McCauley, co-founders of Riverside Trauma Center, on receiving Lifetime Achievement Awards in recognition of their longstanding contributions to su***de prevention and postvention.

Debbie Helms of Samaritans of Merrimack Valley spoke to the impact of both honorees' work. Tamiya McAuley — whose decision to pursue her MSW was influenced by Jim's mentorship — accepted his award and read his remarks. Larry received his award in person, joined by his family and colleagues from the Riverside Trauma Center team.

In his remarks, Larry took a moment to address state legislators in attendance, highlighting the importance of funding the 2014 Massachusetts law (M.G.L. c. 71, § 95), which established a framework for su***de prevention training for school staff but has not been funded or fully implemented statewide. He also encouraged clinicians to advocate within their licensing boards and professional organizations to make su***de assessment and prevention training a standard part of graduate education.

Thank you to Acting Massachusetts Department of Mental Health Commissioner Beth Lucas, Massachusetts Department of Public Health Commissioner Robbie Goldstein, and all who attended. Congratulations, Larry and Jim, on this well-deserved recognition. ***dePrevention

Last week, Riverside Early Head Start in Somerville hosted a Community Baby Shower — and what a celebration it was!

We were honored to welcome Representative Marjorie Decker from Cambridge, a proud Head Start alumna, who spoke movingly about her own childhood experience and left our families feeling truly inspired. She even decorated a onesie and gifted it to one of our parents!

We were also joined by the Somerville Family Learning Collaborative (SFLC) and the Massachusetts WIC Nutrition Program, which provided valuable resources to attendees. Families enjoyed onesie decorating, a raffle, and received important information on oral health during pregnancy, mental health, safe sleep, and nutrition.

We have immediate openings in our free home visiting program for pregnant families and children from birth to age 3 in Somerville, Cambridge, and Medford. Visit https://ow.ly/RjBR50YuPHe to learn more.

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month — and Riverside is proud to highlight a program built by and for the families who show up every day.

Our Family Leadership Program provides education, advocacy training, and leadership development for parents and caregivers of individuals eligible for DDS services. What makes it unique: all training and mentoring is led by fellow family caregivers with firsthand experience — people who know this journey from the inside.

The program serves two regions — Metro and Northeast — and is offered as a free annual series of weekend sessions throughout the year. Topics focus on best practices, building a vision for your loved one's future, and developing the skills to advocate at the local and state level.

If your family member is eligible for DDS services, this program is for you — free of charge, and open to all ages and disabilities.

🎉 Congratulations to Judi on 25 Years at Riverside Community Care! 🎉

Judi (at center holding the plaque) began her journey with Riverside at the Outpatient Center in Norwood and now serves at the Outpatient Center in Newton. Over the past 25 years, she has been a dedicated clinician and a wonderful example of Riverside’s mission to provide quality, compassionate care to individuals with complex challenges.

Both the people we serve and Judi’s colleagues have been enriched by her expressive arts projects, which bring color, hope, and creative connection to the community. Her creativity and commitment have made a lasting impact on so many lives.

Thank you, Judi, for 25 years of care, compassion, and inspiration. 💙

When a student returns to school after a psychiatric hospitalization, the transition matters. Riverside Trauma Center co-founder and senior consultant Jim McCauley recently led educators and administrators through trauma-informed best practices for student re-entry — a training hosted by Massachusetts Partnerships for Youth.

The feedback said it all. "The re-entry after hospitalization presentation is one of the best I've seen in a long time," said Christine Simcoe, a school adjustment counselor at Marshfield High School. "I feel like my participation today will directly impact my work."

Your story could help save lives across the country. 💙

Riverside’s SOS for Students program is an evidence-based su***de prevention training that teaches youth how to identify warning signs of su***de and depression while encouraging them to seek help from trusted adults. We're looking for young adults who experienced su***de risk in middle or high school and are comfortable in their recovery to share their story on camera for our next SOS video update. Flexible scheduling, including evenings and weekends, is available, and participants receive a small stipend for a half-day of filming.

If you or someone you know is interested, please contact Meghan Diamon at mdiamon@riversidecc.org.

Head Start Advocacy Day at the State House!

Yesterday, our Early Head Start team headed to Beacon Hill wearing red — to show the love for our families, staff, legislative supporters, and communities, and in the spirit of Valentine's Day! 💕

The team met individually with State Representative Paul Donato, Rep. Marjorie Decker, Christine Barber - State Representative, and Rep. Mike Connolly to advocate for Head Start State Supplemental Grants. Thank you to these dedicated legislators for taking the time to hear about the challenges facing our programs, the ongoing need for financial support, and the critical services we provide every day.

A special thank you as well to Riverside Board program liaison Annette Shine for joining us. Our voices were heard! 💪
