Cold and flu season is upon us! What do you do if you develop symptoms? Here is what I always recommend to my patients for a cough. đˇ
1. Do you have a wet cough or dry cough? Are you coughing up phlegm or is it a dry, hacking cough.
If you have a wet cough, you need an expectorant to break the mucus up. Go with any product that contains guaifenesin.
If you have a dry, hacking cough, you need a cough suppressant. Go with anything that contains dextromethorphan or look for Delsym.
Or grab a combination product! Mucinex DM and Robitussin DM are most popular. DiabeticTussin is a great option for anyone worried about sugar content.
2. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Water will help thin out mucus, making it easier to cough up. Humidifiers also help keep the air moist, making it less irritating to breathe. Donât have a humidifier? Sit in a hot shower.
3. Peppermint, eucalyptus and rosemary essential oils are amazing at opening up airways, relieving cough symptoms and nourishing airways. Rub on your chest and breathe deep. Or add a few drops during your hot shower. My favorite trick is to rub peppermint essential oil on my throat when I have a spastic cough. The menthol will calm the airways making it easier to breathe.
4. Did you know allergy meds can help with cold and flu symptoms? If your cough is still bothersome, try an antihistamine or steroid nasal spray. This will help reduced post nasal drip and tingling in the throat that may be causing a cough.
If these donât work, reach out to your healthcare provider for prescription medication. As always, this is for educational purposes only, please consult your healthcare provider.
