BEST, which stands for Behavioral Enhancement and Substance Abuse Medicine Treatment was founded in 2013 with a mission to treat individuals suffering from substance abuse and mental health disorders. BEST is an oasas licensed outpatient clinic with multiple locations across Long Island, and has been here in this building since 2018 - we have dedicated personnel to treat individuals struggling with with substance use disorders and mental health issues. We are deeply concerned about the proposed opening of a cannabis dispensary sharing the southern wall with our outpatient treatment center.
Our clients are working every day to overcome addiction and maintain sobriety. Placing a dispensary in such close proximity introduces a significant and unnecessary trigger that could jeopardize their progress and well-being, not only in relapse but also in triggering underlying mental health issues. Recovery requires a supportive, stable, and safe environment — one that promotes health and minimizes temptation and exposure to substances.
We support responsible regulation and access for medical and legal cannabis use. However, we firmly believe that dispensaries should not be located adjacent to treatment centers that serve individuals actively seeking recovery.
