🗣️Program Spotlight - Teen Tastic

Get ready for laughs, friendships, and feel-good vibes at Teen Tastic!

Teen Tastic at GiGi’s Playhouse Deerfield is the ultimate hangout where teens can truly be themselves, build confidence, make new friends, and reconnect with old ones. Whether they are dancing, playing games, chatting, or just enjoying time together, Teen Tastic is all about creating a space where everyone feels welcomed, included, and celebrated.

The best part? Teen Tastic is run by our amazing Youth Board, who bring the energy, creativity, and fun every single month!

Join us on the third Sunday of every month at 4pm for an afternoon full of connection and excitement. Teen Tastic is for ages 13 to 18. Participants who are 14 and older may be dropped off without an adult as long as they have a recent Medical and Emergency Contact form on file.

🌟Volunteer Spotlight 🌟 Julia!

Julia first found the GiGi's Playhouse Deerfield seven years ago through her time with Elinn, and fell in love with the programs here at GiGi's Playhouse Deerfield! She has had the ability to watch Elinn grow up through programs at GiGi's, and now Elinn gets to be a Jr. Bridesmaid in her wedding this summer!

She now comes and hangs out every Tuesday for GiGi Kitchen Teen with her fiancé, Chris! Her favorite thing about GiGi’s Deerfield is the variety of programs and age groups we work with! She is a k-2nd Special Education teacher and loves that GiGi’s Playhouse gives kids with Down syndrome the opportunity to be with other people just like them!

Outside of work and GiGi’s, Julia loves thrift shopping and being the world’s best Bunny mom!!

Want to volunteer but sticky fingers not your jam? We get it! While we love volunteers who want to be hands on, we also have plenty of behind-the-scenes opportunities that keep the playhouse running strong.

From joining a committee, organizing and admin work to tutoring, cooking and fitness, there is something for every age and interest! Whether you’re hands-on with our kids or rocking it from behind the scenes like Mason, there is a place for you at GiGi’s Deerfield.

The best part of coming to regular programs is learning the routine. This week, Teddy was quite insistent about visiting Mr. Bill for GiGiFIT preschool 😂 We got so excited when his mom told us about it, we had to share!

“When I came home, Teddy saw the GiGi’s logo on my sweatshirt and he started signing ‘GiGi’s’ and ‘go,’ then added Mr. Bill’s famous high-fives from GiGiFIT. When I told him there wasn’t GiGi’s today, he whined ‘Moooom!’ and signed it all over again and added ‘shoes’ just in case I didn’t understand.” ~ Molly, Teddy’s Mom

It's heartwarming to see how much these moments mean to him. What makes GiGi’s unique is that it doesn’t feel like another clinical appointment or therapy. It’s play, it’s fun, it’s friends, and it is also therapy! See why Teddy LOVES GiGiFIT and join us Tuesdays from 2:30-3:30pm. Open to all participants from emerging walkers up to six years old.

🌟Program Spotlight: LMNOP 🌟

Before we talk about LMNOP, let me introduce myself. Hi, I’m Dana, the Operations Coordinator for GiGi’s Playhouse Deerfield. Before I started on staff, I was “just” a mom trying to find a community of people who get it.

I was first introduced to GiGi’s Deerfield through family friends who have a son with Down syndrome. A few years later, my own son surprised me with an extra chromosome. At the time we didn’t live nearby, but we kept coming back to visit and always planned our trips around LMNOP. Eventually those visits became so frequent that we found a way to move back. One of the biggest reasons was simple: we needed to be at LMNOP more.

LMNOP, which stands for Language Music N’ Our Peeps, is a fun, hands on class where parents and little ones learn basic sign language and early communication through music, movement, and playful language activities. It is designed for babies from pre-natal to 36 months, but it quickly becomes so much more than just a class.

This week, Mason and one of the first friends he made at LMNOP, Millie, “graduated” together, and my heart was so full. LMNOP became so much more than singing songs. It is the excitement of seeing your baby “knock knock knock” for the first time (IYKYK). It is them proudly doing the motions to Walk Ole Joe while avoiding dinner. It is the wobbly walk across the room for the biggest, best friend hug when they walk into the playhouse.

LMNOP gave Mason confidence and friendships. It gave me community.

Even after a long day, Gloria shows up to GiGiFIT Teen with the biggest smile, brought the best energy, and absolutely CRUSHES IT! From start to finish, she gave it her best, no shortcuts, no slowing down, just pure determination! Not only does she give her best of all, she cheers others on, jumping into every activity, and making the whole room brighter just by being her.

Tired? Maybe.

Program Spotlight: Gratitude Committee 🌟

You know the feeling of dread you get on Sunday nights knowing you have to get up and go to work in the morning? At GiGi’s Deerfield, we don’t! Monday mornings here are ALWAYS exciting thanks to Gratitude Committee! Every week we take time to show our community how thankful we are for thier support. Self advocates and volunteers work together to create cards, make the playhouse welcoming to all who visit and other projects that come up!

🎖️Volunteer Spotlight: Mr. Bill

When you think about hero’s you typically picture capes and masks. But our playhouse hero has endless patience, the strength of iron, and more energy than of a herd of baby goats. Mr. Bill runs GiGiFIT Preschoolers and is absolutely adored by the participants in his program. From carrying kids around, to somersaults, bubble eating, high jumping and more, Mr. Bill is truly super. He brings the best activities to keep these new walkers active and engaged for the full hour program. He’s also famous for giving the best high fives. IYKYK. Emerging walkers up to 6 year olds are welcome to join in every Tuesday from 2:30-3:30pm! Thank you Mr Bill!
