Tooth sensitivity to hot or cold is a common concern, and it usually signals that the tooth’s protective layers have been compromised.

When enamel thins or gums recede, the underlying tooth structure becomes more exposed. This allows temperature changes to reach the nerve more easily, causing that sudden sharp sensation.

Sensitivity can be linked to enamel wear, grinding, gum recession, cavities, or even recent whitening treatments. The key is identifying why it’s happening — because the right solution depends on the cause.

If sensitivity is interfering with eating or drinking comfortably, a dental evaluation can help prevent it from getting worse and guide appropriate treatment.

If you’re thinking about whitening your teeth, it helps to understand what works best for your level of staining and how long results typically last.

Here are the most common whitening options we recommend:

Over-the-counter whitening strips
• Ideal for mild discoloration
• Results usually appear within 1–2 weeks
• Convenient and budget-friendly
• Results may be more subtle and temporary

Custom take-home whitening trays
• Custom fit for even, controlled whitening
• Gradual results over 1–2 weeks
• Often longer-lasting than strips
• Excellent for ongoing maintenance

In-office whitening
• Fastest option with noticeable results in one visit
• Great for special occasions
• Longevity depends on habits and maintenance

Whitening results last longest when paired with good oral hygiene, mindful habits, and the right maintenance plan.

At Del Mar Dental Studio, we help patients choose whitening options that fit their goals, comfort, and everyday routines — so results look natural and last. 💙

Inflammation doesn’t stop at the gumline — and research continues to show why periodontal health matters far beyond your mouth.

Studies supported by the American Heart Association and published in the Journal of the American Heart Association have found an association between chronic gum inflammation and cardiovascular health. This research highlights how oral bacteria and the body’s immune response can influence overall health.

When gums are inflamed, bacteria and inflammatory markers can enter the bloodstream, contributing to systemic inflammation — a known factor in heart disease risk.

Healthy gums help protect more than your smile — they play a role in supporting your overall wellbeing.

Why this matters:
• Gum inflammation can increase systemic inflammatory markers
• Oral bacteria can enter circulation through inflamed gums
• Long-term inflammation is linked to cardiovascular risk

At Del Mar Dental Studio, serving Del Mar and the San Diego area, we take a whole-body approach to oral health. Our goal is to partner with you in protecting both your gum health and long-term wellness — because your smile is connected to more than just your teeth. 💙

Dental insurance is helpful for basic preventive care, but its limits don’t always line up with what is clinically best for your long-term oral health.

Because we are out of network, we are able to recommend the best treatment for your individual needs rather than being restricted by insurance rules or downgraded procedures. This allows us to focus on:

✅ evidence-based dentistry
✅ high-quality materials and labs
✅ advanced technology
✅ treatment plans designed specifically for you

What this means for our patients:

• Treatment recommendations are based on health, not coverage limits
• More flexibility in materials, techniques, and timing of care
• You can see the full range of options, not just “what’s covered”
• Clear conversations about costs and benefits before treatment
• Our team helps with paperwork and reimbursement submissions

Our philosophy is simple: your health comes first. Insurance can be part of the conversation, but it should never be the only deciding factor. We want you to have access to every option — especially the one that is best for your long-term comfort, function, and health.

If you ever have questions about out-of-network care or how reimbursement works, we’re always happy to walk through it with you.

💙 Thank you for trusting us with your smile.

Many people think of the mouth and gut as separate — but science shows they are part of a connected microbial ecosystem that influences overall health.

Studies indicate that oral bacteria can be swallowed and reach the gastrointestinal tract, potentially affecting the balance of microbes in the gut and influencing immune responses. This is especially true when the oral microbiome becomes imbalanced, such as with periodontal disease. Researchers have found that bacteria associated with gum inflammation can travel to the gut and may contribute to bacterial changes there.

This connection is often referred to as the oral-gut axis, and it highlights how oral bacteria and gut microbes can interact and influence each other through swallowed saliva, immune signaling, and systemic pathways.

For patients, this means oral health isn’t just about avoiding cavities — it’s also about supporting balanced microbial communities throughout the digestive system. Regular dental hygiene, periodontal care when needed, and consistent checkups help maintain that balance, potentially supporting not just your smile but your overall well-being. 💙

Hydration plays a larger role in oral health than many people realize — and with electrolytes becoming more popular, it’s a great time to talk about how they affect your teeth. 💧

Electrolyte drinks and packets can be helpful for hydration during exercise, illness, or long days. However, many popular options are acidic or contain added sugars, which can impact tooth enamel if they’re used frequently or sipped throughout the day.

Saliva is essential for protecting enamel, neutralizing acids, and controlling harmful bacteria. Research shows that reduced saliva flow — often caused by dehydration — increases the risk of cavities, gum disease, and oral discomfort.

Smart hydration tips for oral health:
• Use electrolytes when needed, not all day long
• Choose low- or no-sugar options when possible
• Drink electrolytes with meals instead of sipping
• Rinse with water afterward to help protect enamel

Small hydration choices can make a meaningful difference for both your smile and your overall health. 💙

Did you know there’s a way to help kids develop healthier smiles before braces are even needed? 😄

The Myobrace® system is a pre-orthodontic device that helps correct poor oral habits, promote proper jaw development, and support better airway function — all while gently guiding teeth into alignment as they grow.

✅ Encourages nasal breathing and healthy facial growth
✅ Supports proper tongue position and function
✅ May reduce or simplify future orthodontic treatment
✅ Helps kids sleep and feel better overall

It’s a simple, proactive way to help children grow strong, confident smiles. If you’ve noticed your child mouth breathing, snoring, or showing signs of crowded teeth, Myobrace could be a game-changer. 💙

White spot lesions are the chalky, lighter areas on teeth that often appear after orthodontic treatment or where plaque collects.

They occur when enamel loses minerals. As enamel becomes more porous, it changes the way light reflects off the tooth — which is why these areas look white or chalky compared to surrounding enamel.

Patients can help protect enamel at home by:
• brushing with fluoride or hydroxyapatite toothpaste
• flossing daily, especially around brackets
• limiting frequent sipping of acidic and sugary drinks
• rinsing with water after soda, sports drinks, or citrus
• using xylitol gum or mints to stimulate saliva

Today, we have conservative options like Icon resin infiltration, which can:
✔️ blend or eliminate many white spots
✔️ preserve natural tooth structure
✔️ avoid drilling or anesthesia
✔️ improve both esthetics and confidence

If you or your teen has white spots after braces or from past enamel changes, we’re happy to evaluate the best approach — sometimes small changes make a big difference.
