What kind of does Jada have?
The truth is the word Alopecia actually means hair loss.
When you attach the word Alopecia to a specific condition it refers to different kinds of hair loss.
For example: Androgenetic Alopecia also known as female pattern and male pattern baldness, Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis, Alopecia Universalis and the list goes on. Alopecia or hair loss can be an inherited genetic trait, some thing that is induced by a psychological or physiological change, or an auto immune disorder. What makes the scenario more sensitive in Jada’s case is the fact that she has been diagnosed with the autoimmune form of alopecia. This particular kind of alopecia known as alopecia areata can be particularly stressful to deal with. There is no known cause although there can be various triggers. Hair can fall out and patches very suddenly then regrow and then fall again. This roller coaster of fall and regrowth can result in a roller coaster of emotions. So when Chris rock made a comment about Jada’s hair to him it was a joke but the joke was the result of ignorance. Jada‘s new hair was a style choice yes but one that was a consequence of an auto immune disorder that she has no control over. Jada‘s decision to shave her head was a choice that many men and women with this disorder choose.
Treatments include intralesional steroid injections, topical prescription medication‘s as well as natural over the counter products to minimize AA flare up. All of the solutions are not guaranteed to regrow hair but can help in some instances.
The irony that Chris Rock did a documentary called Good Hair and then literally insulted a woman of color on the very delicate issue that documentary talked about.
Certainly, this joke was in bad taste. However was it justified for Will to react like he did? I’m not sure that violence is the answer but the event is certainly striking up conversation and that is good news. What do you think?
