Friday Funeral Fact:
Alexander the Great’s beloved horse, Bucephalus, was honored after his death with a ceremonial burial. Alexander even named an entire city—Bucephala—in his horse’s memory, recognizing the deep bond they shared. For thousands of years, people have honored not only human lives, but the animals who walked beside them, served faithfully, and became part of their story.

Why Small Details Often Matter Most to Grieving Families
During times of loss, families may not remember every word spoken—but they remember how they felt. Small details, like a favorite song, a thoughtful gesture, or careful attention to personal wishes, can bring comfort when everything else feels overwhelming. Those quiet moments of care often mean the most, reminding families they were truly seen, heard, and supported.

Friday Funeral Fact:
In many traditions, timing is guided by religious and cultural meaning. For example, Jewish funerals are not held on the Sabbath or major holy days, Catholic families often avoid Good Friday and Holy Saturday, and some Asian cultures avoid services on dates believed to bring imbalance or bad fortune. These customs help ensure services are held at a time that feels respectful, appropriate, and aligned with deeply held beliefs.

Laughter at a funeral can feel surprising, but it’s a natural part of grief. Sharing a funny memory or smiling through tears often brings comfort, releases tension, and reminds people of the life that was lived—not just the loss. Moments of laughter don’t mean someone is grieving less. They simply reflect the many emotions that can exist at the same time when people come together to remember someone they love.

Friday Funeral Fact:
Valentine’s Day is named for St. Valentine, a 3rd-century priest who was imprisoned and martyred for his faith. He is remembered for his compassion and devotion, and long before cards and flowers, the day honored love, sacrifice, and commitment that endure beyond a lifetime.

How Funeral Homes Prepare for Services During Extreme Weather
Behind every service is careful planning—especially when weather becomes unpredictable. Funeral homes monitor conditions closely, adjust schedules when needed, coordinate with cemeteries and clergy, and make sure facilities remain safe and accessible for families and guests. That preparation allows services to move forward with dignity and care, even when circumstances are challenging, so families can focus on what matters most: honoring a life and being together.

Friday Funeral Fact:
In the past, funerals were often held at home, where families and neighbors gathered to mourn and support one another. While deeply personal, this responsibility could be overwhelming during an already difficult time. Funeral homes emerged to provide professional care, dedicated space, and guidance—helping families focus on remembrance rather than logistics.

Planning ahead isn’t about focusing on the end—it’s about caring for the people you love. When wishes are documented in advance, families are spared from making difficult decisions during an already emotional time. By planning ahead, you offer clarity, guidance, and peace of mind. It’s a thoughtful way to ease stress, avoid uncertainty, and ensure your life is honored in a way that truly reflects your values.

Friday Funeral Fact: Funeral processions date back centuries, created to publicly honor the dead and allow the community to acknowledge a life lost. Headlights were once required so other drivers could easily recognize the procession, show respect, and yield—turning an ordinary road into a shared moment of remembrance.

How Funeral Homes Support Families After Services Conclude

A funeral doesn’t end when the service is over. For many families, that’s when the quiet begins—and when support still matters most. Funeral homes often continue helping by providing guidance on next steps, sharing grief resources, assisting with paperwork, and checking in during the weeks and months that follow.

That ongoing care helps families feel supported as they begin adjusting to life after loss, reminding them they don’t have to navigate the journey alone.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of one of our favorite people, Bill Denston.

Bill dedicated over 16 years of service to all of us at Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home, faithfully serving our communities and the families who entrusted us during their most difficult times. Through his work at funerals and personal stories, Bill touched countless lives with his kindness, compassion, and commitment.

He was more than a coworker, he was our family. Our favorite Marine, Bill’s presence, his heart for service, and the care he showed every family will never be forgotten. We will forever miss his southern accent and the warmth he brought to every room.

He will be deeply and forever missed by all of us here at Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home 💙
