Friday Funeral Fact (Halloween Edition):
The tradition of carving jack-o’-lanterns comes from an old Irish funeral custom. Families carved turnips with frightening faces to ward off wandering spirits during Samhain, a festival marking the boundary between the living and the dead. When Irish immigrants came to America, they found pumpkins easier to carve — and a spooky new tradition was born.

As the holidays draw near, we’re reminded that the greatest gifts aren’t found under a tree — they’re the ones that bring peace of mind to those we love. Preplanning your funeral is one of the most selfless gifts you can give your family. It eases future stress, ensures your wishes are known, and allows your loved ones to focus on honoring your life rather than making difficult decisions. This season of togetherness is the perfect time to start the conversation. A gift of planning today becomes a legacy of love tomorrow.

* Alexis helped with my younger brother's unexpected, remarkably painful passing. She listened to my parents and provided my family with the information they needed to make this horrific situation as easy as possible. In addition to that she communicated with my parents on timeframes that were convenient for them. This was significant because there was a time change and over a 1500 mile distance that she had to accomodate. Her service was second to none.

My brother's remains and service were dignified. Additionally, all the questions my family had were answered in a timely manner. Lastly, the patience and empathy was authetic. Alexis, thank you for your service and kindness.

I hope this feedback makes it to those upper and you get the recognition you deserve for your work. Once more thank you for minimizing all complications that could have been associated with this painful process. Your service made a lasting positive impression on my family and brought some form of peace on the absolute worst days we have ever experienced.

As parents, we often wonder if children should attend funerals. While it depends on the child and their comfort level, many families find that including children can actually help them. With gentle guidance, funerals give kids a safe way to say goodbye, honor their loved one, and begin to understand what loss means. Even simple participation — lighting a candle, placing a flower, or sharing a memory — can bring comfort and healing.

Friday Funeral Fact:
The surrealist painter Salvador Dalí was laid to rest in 1989 in a place as eccentric as his art. He is buried in a crypt beneath the stage floor of his own museum in Figueres, Spain. Today, visitors unknowingly walk right above him as they explore his imaginative world.

Friday Funeral Fact:
In 1952, Eva “Evita” Perón died at just 33, and her body was embalmed with unusual precision. But after a military coup, her remains were hidden and moved in secret across continents for nearly 20 years. Eventually, she was returned to Argentina, where she rests in the Duarte family mausoleum.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor survivors, remember those we’ve lost, and support the families still walking this journey.

Grief and hope often live side by side — and both deserve space. As we reflect this month, let’s stand together in raising awareness, offering compassion, and reminding one another that no one faces loss or healing alone.

If you’re honoring someone touched by breast cancer this month, we hold their memory with you.

Friday Funeral Fact:
After his death in 323 BC, Alexander the Great’s body was placed in a gold sarcophagus and transported with great ceremony. Ptolemy, one of his generals, seized the body and moved it to Egypt, where it was displayed for centuries. The tomb later vanished from history and has never been found — one of the ancient world’s greatest mysteries.

After a loss, the paperwork can feel overwhelming — from death certificates to Social Security, VA benefits, and insurance forms. One of the most important ways a funeral home helps families is by guiding them through this process. We prepare and file the necessary documents, provide certified copies of the death certificate, and help ensure benefits and accounts are handled correctly. It’s one more way we take care of the details, so you can focus on remembering and honoring your loved one.
