September is National Su***de Prevention Month.
This month, we join countless voices in raising awareness, offering hope, and reminding our community that no one has to walk through their struggles alone.

If you or someone you love is experiencing thoughts of su***de, help is available.

FRIDAY FUNERAL FACT
Biodegradable caskets aren’t just a modern trend—they’re rooted in centuries of tradition. Long before metal and hardwood were common, people used materials like willow, seagrass, and pine for simple, earth-friendly burials. Today, biodegradable caskets offer a natural return to the earth—ideal for green burial practices and those seeking a gentler environmental impact. A meaningful choice for families who want their farewell to reflect their values.

National Grief Awareness Day is August 30th
Grief looks different for everyone. It has no timeline, no “right” way to move through it—and no need to go it alone. On Saturday, we honor those walking through loss, whether their grief is fresh or carried quietly for years. If you or someone you love is navigating grief, support is out there. From counseling resources to grief groups, help is just a conversation away. You are not alone. We’re here if you need us.

FRIDAY FUNERAL FACT
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, cemetery postcards were a popular way to show off the beauty of local memorial parks. Back then, cemeteries weren’t just places of mourning—they were peaceful public spaces where families gathered for picnics, walks, and reflection. People would send postcards featuring ornate headstones, flowering trees, and carefully landscaped grounds, much like you’d send a postcard from a national park today. A reminder that cemeteries have always been places for both memory and connection.

We’d like to extend our warmest congratulations to DeLand Memorial Gardens on the opening of their newest mausoleum! Thank you for inviting us to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony. It was a beautiful event and a proud moment for our community.

It was a pleasure to see Heather and the rest of the dedicated staff at the cemetery, as well as Father Medina from St. Peter Catholic Church. All of us at Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home truly enjoyed being part of this special occasion.

Wishing continued success and service to families in our area!

Funeral Misconceptions: “If I choose cremation, I can’t have a funeral.”
Truth: Cremation doesn’t replace a funeral—it simply changes the form of care. You can still have a service, viewing, or celebration of life with cremation.

FRIDAY FUNERAL FACT
The haunting notes of Taps have long signaled a soldier’s final rest—but did you know it began as a battlefield improvisation?
During the Civil War in 1862, Union General Daniel Butterfield wanted a softer, more dignified way to end the day instead of the traditional bugle call. He and his bugler reworked an existing melody into the 24 solemn notes we now know as Taps. Today, it’s played at over 1,000 military funerals each year—simple, powerful, and universally moving.

Funeral Misconceptions: “A simple cremation doesn’t need any planning.”
Truth: Even simple cremations involve important decisions—what to do with the ashes, how to honor your memory, and who handles the arrangements.
